Hi all, Recently had a problem with 6-11149 Big Boy. This is one of the early Legacy versions.

I wondered if anyone had come across the same problem.

The loco was jerking/running at uncontrollable speed for short bursts.

I checked over the wiring and reseated connections. Checked the encoder ring. However the fault continued.

I then disconnected the smoke unit and the loco ran fine when tested.I opened up the smoke unit and found it was quiet chard and the batting pad was burnt on to the element.

I had a spare element and some of the new style wick material. So I replaced those and reassembled it. Much to my surprise this appears to have fixed the problem.

Would a smoke element going bad cause a short that would cause the loco to apparently lose command signal?

Yes, and especially if it was grounding to the housing of the smoke unit on the center rail side. Can be common, had it on a my N&W J. G
