and no, of course I would not mind; please forward ahoy!
PS-I am making a freight CFA20-4, so yes, the steam generator stuff had to go!
wink!
thanks,
Mario

Hah , I didn't fully read your post ... you caught my first post before I deleted it
bwahahaha. Must read entire post before commenting ....
All the details are pretty much sanded.
All the grilles are gone.
I cut around the nose door and the cab doors, to give them a little extra depth.
I'll let the soda blaster take care of the rest of the flash, smooth out the edges and get a good tooth for the primer.
Nice work Mario - it's inspiring! Unfortunately your beautiful 3D printed grills and fans are coming into play years too late for my C-Liners. Your posts did inspire me to share a 42 year saga related to Rivarossi C-Liners which I posted over on the 2 rail forum.

I bet you, master modeler, could either get a new set to play with, and/or get the original ones cut out for the new grilles.
Well see how they come out first, before I get you some to play with.
Thanks!
Mario
Ed, are you sure you don't want to reconsider?
For now, they're just stuck in there, without the frames.
The idea is to glue them to the frames and then glue the frames to the inside of the shell.
Thanks,
Mario
PS-here's more:
With inside frame:
Radiator fan housing and screen:
Dynamic brake fan screen:
They looks great Mario. If saw my backshop loaded with steam power awaiting paint and DCC you'd understand why I'll just have to live with the C-Liners as they are for now. Meanwhile keep the posts coming - they are inspirational.
Impressive work'... Love the C Liners and Erie Built s'..
Thanks...
Heres the test fit of the fans...
I like the way the housings fit in the opening (drilled with a 3/4" hole saw bit), but the fan screen leaves a little to be desired. I think I'll put a 0.050" lip around the entire outside of the screen, so it can sit flush in the roof and fill any gap around the outside. This will also give us wiggle room for adjustments.
...and before you say anything... no, I didn't use a drill press and it shows.
Thanks,
Mario
The fans are a really nice start, looking forward to seeing them with the lip.
On really large holes I typically don't drill them full size but go smaller and use a tapered reamer. It doesn't melt the plastic and you can do multiple test fits.
Tom, that's my own fault.
I got inpatient and instead of starting it by hand to ensure that it was good, I used the drill and it drifted.
I rimmed the offending hole with 0.030" styrene and I'll sand it flat with the others once I'm sure it's cured.
Still bummed... but that's what filler is for.
As for the fan diameter, I'll have I check my CAD files, as I don't think I made them large enough from my initial measurements.
Oh, and as for the lip, subsequent inspection shows that there wasn't any that was on top of the carbody. So flush it is...
thanks,
-Mario
Soon, we'll be able to hear those fans running'... Once painted, I doubt any imperfections will be noticeable'...

Thanks for the vote of confidence.
I think you're right...

More work...
I plated over the FM exhaust port. That's probably what they would have done, since it would have been the cheapest and easiest.
Also used a hole punch to cut 1/4" discs from styrene. Then reamed out the hole from the cut off steam generator exhaust with a 1/4" bit, and forced them in place and glued and stacked and glued.
It should sand down nicely.
Have you thought about making a plug for one of the fan openings since most c liners only had 3 fans?

That is an excellent question...
I do realize this, and from what I can tell, it's the Canadian roads that I have seen with 3 radiator fans.
I don't know if any of the Central's CFA-20-44s had three fans, but considering how much of a pain it is to fill and sand (and fill and sand and repeat), I'd like to keep it as four.
Also, notice the dual exhaust stacks and their forward location on the third roof hatch.
I think most the c liners had 3 fans at least the Pennsylvania and Milwaukee ones had 3. It's pretty daunting to think about closing one off, I was thinking if you made a plug that it might be easier if the plug was the correct basic shape. I have no idea how hard that would be to create.
I believe only the 2400 horsepower ones had 4 fans--it was this way on the LIRR units.

Now that makes sense, having more fans for higher HP units.
Here's the CFA-16s:
Thanks!
update:
the Central's CFA16s had four fans...
Thanks, again!
Here's the rear section afterthought filing.
I NEED to soda blast this model so I can get some filler and primer on her.
It's done.
I dropped it after I washed it (swinging it to shake off the water) and snapped off one of the rear ladders.
Then, melted the shell trying to weld a broken piece by the grille back in place
That's it.
.
I have another shell of you want to start over. PM me if you are interested
Gonna start over with a new shell ?
