Hi, someone offered me a Lionel Boom Car derrick mounted on a 6818 flat car. Says it seems genuine. Both cars are from 1958. Could this be an error from Lionel ? Also the car has the outriggers.

Sounds like a new postwar car that someone has invented. The 6818 comes with a xmfr as its load. I wouldn't pay more than what the boom and rigging are worth as spare parts and then only if it's original.

My buddy would say those were weasel words.
The 6660 should have outriggers. The boom and outriggers are attached to a metal platform which is then attached to the flatcar. I think there are prongs that fit through some of the stake pockets. So the boom / outriggers assembly could easily be moved to another flat.
The 6670 has the boom assembly riveted directly to the flatcar, which makes it a bit more difficult to fake. Still, a skilled person with the right tools could do it.
While Lionel did make mistakes, I would not pay a premium for this car. When I was trying to find a 6660, I would have passed on one mounted to a flatcar with the wrong number.
Wise answers, i'll keep searching for a real one.

My search for the boom car led me to follow the ads locally in Kijiji .
Found a complete train set with the car and a NW2 switcher (613). Set 1593.
Funny thing is that the boom was also on a 6818!
Fortunately it also had the 6660 flat car.

Are you saying that the set had both a 6818 and 6660 flat car and both had the boom assembly? Or did only the 6818 flat have the boom assembly, and the 6660 was empty or had something else?
As I wrote earlier, the boom platform is easily moved from car to car.
That 613 is considered one of the more difficult switchers to find. From what I see in the picture, yours looks rather nice. Good find!
The platform was on the 6818 and the 6660 was empty. I moved the boom back on the 6660 and the 6818 is missing the transformer.
After cleaning and lube, the 613 is working great. The deal came with a ZW, change the cord and rollers.
