I would like to buy some of these...anybody have any? I bought a used Genset and a couple of these have crushed hinges.

I also need four sliding windows if Lionel won't let me have any...

The proper amount of fluid is a bit tricky. Too much and too little are very close together. But once I get it inbetween, it pours out smoke. I was tempted to take it apart and repack the smoke, but am kind of looking to see what I will have to deal with in taking it apart. The only you tube video I have found is for the one smoke unit variety of genset.

The biggest issue with the VL Genset is all the delicate added on parts.  Oh, and do NOT hold it by any windows, they pop out if you look at them!

When you get it running right, it's a very cool rig.  I use the flapper stacks for demo only, when I want to run it for any length of time, I put the straight stacks on it.  The flappers get gummed up with smoke fluid after a spell and you have to wash them off by dipping them in alcohol and swishing them around.  They're then ready for another 10-15 minutes and they'll start sticking again.

The flapper stacks on this one had bent hinges like it had been rested on the stacks, one I could not straighten so to keep the image, I glued the flap open. The other two are pretty much fine. The glued one looks ok, but I'm looking for some of these. It's smoking ok so far, but repacking with the 691SMKP008  is a good idea I think. We repacked a Lionel Veranda Turbine the other day and it smoked great...like an MTH I assume

The difference between the single smoke unit genset and the Vision genset is remarkable. The single smoke unit one is kind of boring.

Boring, but a good running unit.   I have worked on many Vision Genset locomotives.  I do not own one for reasons.   Some of what John stated for openers.  I wish everyone great luck with the locomotive.  I have a few MTH Genset locomotives.  The MBTA runs one in my neighborhood and I catch it often going by.  I am a big power fan and two motors in my book beats one any day of the week.

I tried to remove the shell from my Vision Genset but the rear truck area seemed to stop moving when the shell was raised by about a quarter inch. Is there something there I need to attend to besides removing the front and rear snow scoops and 6 screws from the underneath? The front of the shell lifts up readily. But the rear clunks against something and I hesitate to apply force. I did try to shift the shell from front to rear while lifting and no help. Maybe the truck motor is hitting an edge of the shell inside?

I have the UP version and I took the shell off to work on the smoke units. It is tricky. It's more fun putting it back on and making sure you don't pinch any wires.  Sounds like you got all the screws. Mine hangs up on the rear too. I think it's the flywheel catching the inside of the shell. I gently moved the shell from side to side at a little bit of an angle, and was able to get it off. There are a lot of wires going to the shell.

I'm probably just too careful, but I did pull pretty hard on the shell rear and it seemed solid. I am getting good smoke out of #1 and #3, but #2 is pretty much nothing. I keep vascillating between "it's good enough" and "it's keeping me awake" on rebuilding the smokers. One thread of pictures showing the smoke units kind of explains the problem.  Also some pics I've seen the smoke unit area looks pretty much stuffed full. But it might be fun to go thru it. I stuffed some Kleenex loosely in the cab while working on it to keep the windows from falling out for the eleventh time.

I bought the engine from an 89 yo friend who is scaling down so I don't have too much in it...and plus $20 to Lionel (should have made up a list of stuff to order on the same shipping) for the windows which were missing. But I want to keep it working and nice.

Oh good. I can do that...I think maybe if I leave the engine on it's wheels and wiggle the shell lifting it off is probably the easiest while handling the weight.

Wow, thank you for starting this thread, Yes, the windows will fly out just looking at them. So far, a friend glued them in with transparent cement....Mine has 20 minutes run time, all functions work great. I like the 3 steam stacks that come on when needed.  Also, it's a crowd pleaser and a great conversation piece.  Hope you get your engine up to par....Happy Railroading...
