I’m in the process of rehabbing my Bethlehem Steel Triple Action Crane. Some folks on this board were kind enough to suggest that my crane was suffering from hard as a rock caked on old grease which was preventing the gears from turning. They were right. When I opened the first gear box the hearts were caked with SOLID grease, which I have since removed using Blaster and soaking. I then used a dental tool to get the loosened grease out of the teeth. I then replaced it with a small amount of Super Lube. You may be having the same problem.
My latest problem is that I can’t get the second gearbox to open. I’m afraid of damaging or breaking the tabs by using too much pressure.
Wow! You are dead on, cleaned mine and the crane will give you whiplash. Going to try and find an o ring for the up and down. I met resistance with the lids also, I just pulled harder and it popped off. Good luck
