Gary, that's the same method we used for Atlas track, and it worked out well. A little ballast and you'd hardly know it's there.
I usually order one legacy engine a year, sometimes two. Last year I ordered the Great Northern SD45, "Hustle Muscle" and picked it up last week. Its a nice engine, I really like it and posted a few pictures on another thread on the SD45. A few posters noted that the Orange Module was not included and asked for help. So 1) buyers should not have to guess what is going on! 2) a brochure or insert on how to load the info manually should have been included. Look we have been trained for years to expect the Orange Module, so just not including it with no note makes the initial reaction to make one think that their was a mistake in the packaging. Maybe the brochure includes a link to the video on how to do it. Eric's Trains (Eric Siegel) has a great video on how to do a legacy upgrade, using the Legacy System Utility, so I found that very helpful and motivated me to try it.
On a separate issue, which I posted about on the SD45 thread, it did not run in conventional using my CW 80 transformer but it did run in conventional using my Lionel ZW C. It did run in Legacy on both. This is the first time I have had a Legacy engine that did not run in conventional using the CW 80. I know there is an issue with running MTH engines on the CW 80, so I had a clue that this was probably a problem with the transformer and not the engine. Again, a heads up from Lionel would be nice on this potential issue.
As a general rule removing feature(s) is received poorly.
Truthfully, I would pay an extra 10 bucks or so for the module. I like having them and they make your product plug and play.
OK, I just received my Southern SD45 and its a real beauty....However, no Orange Module and I hate to sound like a clanging cymbal, but, when Lionel began this great program they offered the Orange Module to ENTICE us into Legacy. I really am use to this way of programing the engines and although many forum members are able to do it different ways, it really makes it simple for non-computer experts to use. I am willing to pay a bit more for this as most every engine I buy today cost many dollars more. I do hope Lionel will read this because, I will not be a Player for anymore BTO Engines....Simple, but true....I have probably 80 Legacy locomotives and all, but 2 without a module....Therefore, my vote, is for the re-issue of the really reliable, Orange Module.... Come on Lionel....Thank you for reading.
In the recent statement I made above, I want to apologize if I said anything to hurt anyone at Lionel do to a decision to discontinue adding the orange module....It's a "change" in the way I personally look at Legacy/VisionLine Locomotives that I will miss. I just wish they did a survey to see how we feel about their products....So, I am sorry....Leapin Larry

I personally don't think you need to apologize for your view on the subject.
After reading many of the above post about entering the Legacy ID from the Cab 2 controller, I can see it's actually easy. Yes, I like the ease of the module, but, the ease of giving our new engines an ID # is Ok. Instead of having the modules out, I will make a list of the engines and keep it handy for memory purposes. This way when we run an engine that's been on a shelf for a long time, we can find the ID quickly. One thing for sure, change is constant....We just have to adjust.

You can still name the engine as well as giving it a road number. Nothing to remember that way. I'll try to do a more "in depth" manual entry video this weekend. I applaud your patience in learning. If nothing else you get a little more familiar with Legacy.

Larry - I hear you. The others are correct; no need to apologize. When we make decisions, we understand that there will always be people who disagree and don't like the outcome. The modules will not be returning (except for Vision engines to use the remaining stock of modules) - but I want to note that we're currently working on a number of new development projects and everyone is going to see some exciting stuff in the next couple of years. We're just slowly pointing the product lines in a direction that meet our long term vision, and Legacy is and will continue to be a huge part of that.
I do apologize though for not announcing sooner that the modules would be going away. In attempts for better communication and informing our customers, I will try to post updates more regularly. I really enjoy the dialog and product ideas I get from not only the forum, but from train shows, emails, and more. The train people are really what makes this job a blast.

I appreciated your kind help at the past York Train Meet, (April 2017), and your letting us know there are lots of new surprises in the future....A small sheet of instructions on performing the Legacy install would be all that's necessary. The Video that MARTYE shared was fantastic...You are right, it just takes a few minutes and works fine....Thank You for the reply, you have our attention.

I never used the orange modules right from the beginning. It was easier for me to set up the engine the way I wanted.
in reality the orange module was never needed.

However, there's one thing to nitpick in entering the engine info manually vs. using a module or sensor track: While you can enter a road name, you can't type in numbers to enter the locomotive's model type. I.E. SD, not SD40-2. I have been able to enter steam engine names like Mikado and Hudson, though.
I don't know, maybe when Legacy goes to the next version, this might be an option.

Actually you use the numerical keypad for numbers. So where Dave names the engine, if you wanted to add a number at the end of ATSF you would just use the keypad for the numbers. In your example SD40-2, use the dial for the S and D, punch in 40 on the keypad, the dial for the dash, and the keypad for the 2.

Just to add my experience with the sensor track.
I have found it somewhat unreliable. Bare in mind I can't complain at the help I received from Lionel & Jon Z.
Jon even sent me a lab tested sensor track to test against mine for faults.
However I still can't get it working 100% of the time.
As well as my home layout. I also have a LCCA modular layout which is wired exactly to LCCA/Lionel specifications. The sensor tracks show the same issues of reliability when used with this.
I can only think it's some form of electrical or radio interference maybe from my 60Hz inverter set up. However I get the same issues when running on 50Hz so I have discounted this as a issue.
Maybe some form of UK specific interference but I have given up messing with it and just live with it not updating/triggering every time it is crossed.
As others have said it's no hardship to manually enter the engine info into the Cab2.

Just got my new AC-9 yesterday with no memory module. Thanks a bunch for the procedure to do it manually!! Also, now I know that for my other Legacy engines, I can do them manually also.
Dave O., thanks for the PDF with manual instructions. I expect to take delivery of BTO PRR E8's tomorrow, and I would have been at a loss to enter their data manually without it.
