Anybody have one of these 1960's Lionel three lane slot car sets? Anybody ever seen one? I saw one down at York in one of the bandit shows something like ten years ago. I could not tell whether it was complete, so I passed on it.

I have never seen one nor did I know they even made one, but it's pretty cool with the three lanes. Probably worth it for a collector.
Hi CW, thanks for posting. I have only seen them in catalogs. The old Aurora Thunder Jets are collectible.
Had a friend who collected slot cars. I think Aurora are the most popular and draw the biggest buck.
There are people who collect Lionel slot cars too. Typically they are Lionel train collectors who have branched out. With a few exceptions, most of the value is in the cars. Lionel did made a few specialty tracks that draw some extra bucks. And the 5160 viewing stand was worth some money at one time. Not certain in today's market.
Here is a link to a page on the viewing stand. Note that the write-up is in error. It claims that the Lionel slot car line was finished by 1963. Slotcars were still in the 64, 65, and 66 catalogs. And Lionel was still offering slot cars to it's dealers in 1968. I have some factory paper to that effect around somewhere.
The confusion maybe has something to do with Lionel offering a 1/32 and HO line of slotcars. Certainly, the viewing stand is for the bigger cars.
The 3 lane track is definitely unique to all HO lines...probably an answer to the then current craze by a company run by lawyers.

Twice a year here in Richfield Ohio there is an Aurora Model Motoring meet, usually the weekend after York. This has been going on for at least the past 20 years. The color rarity on some cars make them as expensive as our mis-colored post war boxcars.
I remember selling these cars at Hobby House (late 60s) in the $1.50 to $2.50 range. Oh to have had a crystal ball!
I've seen 58 chevys and 58 thunderbirds in excess of $3000.

Both lines were carried through the 1966 catalog.
The viewing stand was listed as "standard scale" only in the 1963 catalog.
