Yeah, who built it?
I don't know who built it but WNEP was where my company NEP Group began many years ago.
That was great! Thanks for sharing.

Saw that last night. Too good!
I grew up near Scranton and part of my layout is an homage to northeastern Pennsylvania. I always enjoy John Oliver but this was over the top wonderful!
Now that was cool
If you got the post office box section, someone made a steam loco and tender from parts from mail equipment

So if I build a cheesy little back yard G-scale and start doing weather forecasts in front of it John will build me one too?
pretty nice gesture on the part of the show.
"Ground plane"........OGGPF?
All I know is if they pick it up, they could be running indoors AND out.
I think Jon is really just looking for ideas on how to get one built for himself
Very impressive. Obviously too nice to be placed outdoors year round so I wonder if the tv station will come forward to have it moved, and if they do, moved where? If not outside that station perhaps in their lobby if they have room for it there. If not, then how about placing it in the town's Visitor Center or Bureau if Scranton has one or else in Scranton's City Hall?
Jon that is great and the layout a great multi scale display that Gryboski's Train store should acquire! Thanks for sharing! The
That is awesome!!! I sure hope that layout finds a great new home.
WNEP, the Scranton station with the now famous backyard train, actually sent a reporter and camera crew down to NYC today to check out the layout. Apparently it has already been partially dismantled since the show is on break for a few weeks, but they are seriously looking to move it to Scranton. There are two problems, however... the layout is 18' wide and 16' tall, so moving it, even in pieces, will be an issue, and they aren't sure that it will even fit in "the backyard". If they can get it to Scranton, it might be a good fit for the Steamtown National Historical Site.
That is bleeping awesome!

This guy (whoever he is) uses the "F" word twice in this bit. Really? Totally unnecessary.
That is an INSTANT turn-off for me.
Yah the F bomb words are unnecessary. The layout is awesome put it indoors and keep the LGB outdoors! Is this for real ? Amusing
Get over it! That was effing great!
I love it!!!

i got a good laugh from the video. VBG

Rich, I agree with you. It's ok with this video, but what turned me off, was when he said, "This thing also catches fire".
It's suppose to be comedy, I guess.
Lackawanna county has a new building, the old globe store, this is the place for it to be on display. Jack tylenda
From WNEP: "TRAIN UPDATE: Well they weren't lying, the train is big. It's 18ft wide and 16ft tall. It's all boxed up now and in storage.
I live 10 minutes from Scranton and saw this today as well. Thought it was funny. Callback 16 can be funny with all the idiots calling in. I don't understand why anyone would waste time doing that to complain about the train in the backyard.

The global store is far from being a new building. It maybe new to the owner, but that building has been around a long time.
Steam town should probably take the layout, they should be able to find room.
Entertaining enough. Personally I dislike johns show (much like ANY of the daily show spin offs for trying to hard) but in all honesty this was pretty good fun.
perhaps the Scranton station could donate it to a local children's hospital or somewhere with the potential for permanent public display.

I must respectfully disagree... other than if they keep doing the nostalgia Christmas windows, who is going to visit a city office building??? I still feel that Steamtown or The Marketplace at Steamtown (formerly known as the Mall) would be better home for the layout. Keep in mind, wherever it goes, someone will need to do ongoing maintenance, and I don't see the cash strapped city ponying up for that.
ROFLMAO
I think you can see why television and theater set designers find it natural to have a business creating "sets" (layouts) for model trains to act on. Roger Farkash (TW Trainworx) and Clark Dunham (Dunham Studios) come to mind. There are others.
The rotating display reminded me of the dealer display of the train that rotated a small circular display.
One can be fairly certain that the "set" would disassemble. That's how they build stuff.
The Marketplace at Steamtown, formerly the Mall at Steamtown, would be an ideal place to display something this size. There is already a model train display on the second floor, Don Clark's miniature memories, and I am sure they would provide assistance as needed to keep the thing running smoothly. And what could be a better backdrop for pictures with Santa?
To add a little more to this entertaining story, it seems a local Scranton man is production assistant on Oliver's TV show. He mentioned how WNEP does the weather with the train in the background and the story evolved from there. Most folks who have seen it are well wishers with the usual curmudgeons weighing in. Their pathetic grievances have been noted.
I'm not a fan of the show or the language either... but a three scale layout with buildings from "The Office" on it is pretty KOOL.
Jon
Maybe contact John Oliver's show, or maybe even look at the credits?
Pretty cool! Thanks for sharing: 3 levels, it rotates, and has fireworks, waterfall, and historic buildings. Awesome! I hope the layout finds a home.
WNEP announced on their 5:30 news that someone has donated a trolley themed tractor trailer to go down to a warehouse in NJ on Friday to pick up the train display. They are still not saying where it will be set up when they get back to Scranton.
Not sure how weather resistant the layout is. I don't think it would hold up very well in the snow. If they had space in the station's lobby, it would look cool there.

I agree with you Rich, his use of "F" word is not what you would expect to find on the OGR web site.

Since there is no real cover "in the backyard", you are on the money, Elliot. PA winters can be nasty. Some of the anchors have facetiously suggested putting it in the middle of the studio so everyone can watch the train all through the newscast instead of just during the weather!!! Not sure if they have enough room in the lobby, but I hope they decide to put it somewhere where the community can easily see it.
