Just put my new Shay on the track today and it moved about 2’ and stopped. Sounds still work. Just wont move. Turned it over and you can turn all the wheels and gearing easily by hand. I’m not very mechanical but it seems to me that something is loose between the motor and the trucks. Tried to look up a manual for this engine and it is not printed yet. Could there be an easy fix or should I call Lionel?

Conflicting opinions on this thread: 3 Truck Say Issues
but it sounds like you may be able to adjust the drive gears to fix the problem.
Send it back with a strong letter from a good law firm . May I recommend the good offices of my personal law firm- Dewey Chestem and Howe😆.
All kidding aside, it is a terrible shame that after paying a big chunk of coin for this engine it will have to go back to Lionel for repairs. Did this engine fail right out of the box?
i’m sure Lionel will make it right. What will it take for Lionel to fix these endless QC problems?
Please keep us updated on your dealings with Lionel.
Take care,
Richard
Yes it just came out of the box this way. Going to call Lionel today
this may or may not help your issue but check the 2 screws that hold the reciprocating cylinder and crankshaft assembly if they loosen up they allow the main motor gear to become unmeshed with each other. if this is your issue a little blue Loctite on both screws will cure that.
reason I mention it is this was a issue with the original tmcc 3 truck shays. as to the gears not meshing on the axels they have a sweet spot it takes some doing but once both axel ends are in the round holes they do line up and run fine afterwards.
hope this might help some of you
When they run, they run fine. Here is my 6-11157:
I have made many improvements to the layout since then, but still OK.

I’m not real mechanical. Any pictures of where this is located?
Holy smokes... Just had sticker shock on the price of these. I guess I will crawl back to my layout with the older TMCC version. Hope everything works out with the repair. I know Lionel will get them fixed right.

Jeff,
You are doing the right think. Just call Lionel and they will take care of it. I will give them credit for mitigating poor QC with quick customer service when these expensive engines and Vision Line products fail right out of the box. My V line PFE reefer had a broken pick up on it when it arrived last year. I will give Lionel credit for a quick response to my email and a very quick turnaround on my repair.
Let us know how it goes.

I picked up my WM three truck Shay yesterday. Tried it out at the store and it ran fine. I brought it home and have had no problems. Glad to see that some of them made it through manufacturing and shipping without failure.
Jeff Gibs,
I have a nice Legacy Shay, it was bounced around in delivery, had to send it back to Lionel, they made every thing right, still runs perfect today.

Was able to repair mine with no problem. Just loosen both truck sides and push them together then retighten screws.
All fixed lube as usual and have fun running this excellent model!!
I have the Lionel Cass TMCC Shay 6-11140 from 2009, bought it new. It had the same problems as above with the drive train right out of the box, It took three trips to my LHS to get it fixed correctly. Hard to believe these problems keep reappearing.
We had a grand opening ceremony yesterday at my home in Clarksville and opened up there Engines, 1- CSXT NW2 Switcher, 2-a new Cass Scenic Railway 3 truck Legacy Shay, and 3- a new S2 TinPlate Inspired Diesel/Box Cab....All performed flawless in Legacy mode....We had fun running these new engines after waiting so Long....even Santa watched the action....

Called Lionel and they were very good about it. Sent me a prepaid label to ship it back for repair. Very happy with their response
