had two new arrivals this week. I picked up this Dorfan hopper because of the broken couplers, so I can make a transistion car for my Flyer,Ives and Lionels.
and this doubled my Dorfan collection!
also picked up another 814 Furniture Automobile car in cream and orange.

American Flyer Set #1200 from 1918
Catalog illustration
The catalog cut is interesting for a number of reasons. First is the illustration of the set itself. The cars are listed as being #1104 baggage and #1103 Passenger cars and the set is shown as powered with dry cells and a rheostat. The prospective owner is encouraged to think about upgrading to a transformer. The boxed text on the left hand side says "Trains can be run on 3 or 4 dry cells. Or they can be run by connecting up a transformer to your electric light socket if you have 110 volt alternating current."
The illustration of the transformer in the lower left is interesting today because of the way the term "electric light socket" has evolved over time. Today one would think in terms of a plug outlet but back in 1918 they did indeed mean an electric light socket - note the screw in fitting for an actual electric light socket at the end of the transformer cord.
The box cover, of course, takes liberties with the actual contents but it certainly appeals to the imagination of what your toy railroad empire might aspire to.

...and finally there is the actual contents. As you can see this set has a #1200 baggage and a #1201 passenger car instead of the cataloged 1104 and 1103 cars.

There is an American Flyer 3008 ART car and a 3007 gondola up for auction on eBay. There are 51 people currently watching each. I am bidding. I expect these to be very active and go pretty high. One just doubled in price in the last hour. Good luck to all on these.

Another little steam engine from AS La Rotonde, a 440 locotender which has been produced 20 years ago.
And to complete the very interesting documentation of Fred's cabooses, here is the french version in O gauge of the tail van, in french 'fourgon de queue'. Also an AS product.

American Flyer Set #1326 1930 -1931
In 1930 it is listed as the NEW POTOMAC
And in 1931 it becomes the POTOMAC
My set has a very nicely restored #3109. These engines are hard to find intact because the two hoods are die-cast and the originals are frequently damaged because zinc pest has caused them to crumble. I don't usually buy restorations, but in the case of this engine it is highly unlikely that I would ever find a complete one, and if I did I am sure I would not be able to afford it.
The colors on the restored engine and the original cars are very strong and attention getting.
(Experimenting with videos again this week)

So.... does Scale-craft count as tinplate? Mostly brass and bronze but definitely prewar. I guess I would need to put some tinplate wheels on it to truly claim it as "tinplate"... maybe "Brassplate"? Anyway, I really love K4's and also like the Scale-craft locos and cars. This is Scale-craft K4 #3 for me and with apologies does need some work. It was set up for outside third rail and still has a giant universal motor in it. Plus I figure the two rail scale guys won't like it because it is 80 years old and not detailed enough. Just kidding on that last part! BTW, those are not original Scale-craft drivers, not sure what they came from, but I'll have to replace those at some point. This thing is a real doorstop too, I think it would keep a semi from rolling back down a hill.

On a more traditional note, I also received this Fandor 8 wheel tank car. It will need some wheels, but that is easy. Maybe I can find a 4 wheel tank car with a good tank!

You can claim it's tinplate and I will claim this is tinplate.
It does have a metal frame and the tank ends feel like metal. I wonder if I could put 2800 series trucks on it and box couplers and replace the ladders with brass or nickel ladders?

I'm sure you could. It would probably sit pretty high on 2800 trucks though. It would look better in the smaller 027 prewar trucks like a 2755 tank car.

Thanks everyone.
No not hard at all. I got power from the interior lighting and used Evans red chip LED’s hot glued behind the lens. All my LED’s come from Evans designs.

I did not realize that new 2817 was a lighted Caboose, now that is way cool, now I understand where you got the electric for the LED's. Are the lights in the 2817 Caboose LED's also?

Sometime when your sitting watching a movie for a few hours, grab a handful of tin wheels and axles, a rag and a bottle of Brasso and go to town. Do that to all those axles and wheels then get em all cleaned off, oil em up and you can pull what ever you want.
Hey, they make or did make 042 and 054 curves in 027 track if you can find some. There is also the Marx 034 which I bet you have some of. Just sayin, you might could modify one of your loops with some broader curves if needed... 
Here you go, complete circle of 054 (027 size) Lionel track. You could keep the 027 inner, change to 042 middle and 054 on the outer loop. I think it would work and wouldn't take any more space to do.
and since we're going down THAT Black Hole, add the back hoe so I can dig out the crawl space under my kitchen so I can add onto the layout and have room for those wider curves, more shelves,room for the cot where I'll be sleeping when I get banished to the basement by The Boss of the house......

or I could buy my mother in law's house next door so it'll stay in the family....has one nice sized room in the basement, be ideal for a new platform.....plenty of wall space for shelves , another room for storage...but I don't really want to have to move all our crap...even next door.
Dennis, if I had to hazard a guess I would say the drivers might be Lobaugh (705, 705A). The catalog offered the drivers with light, medium, or heavy counterweights. The parts page and the locomotive picture are from the 1941 catalog. The left hand driver on the picture of the Lobaugh engine looks to be a reasonable match for yours.

I bet you are correct Robert. I hadn't dug out my Lobaugh catalog yet, but those do look like a spot on match.
new addition ,,,so in honor of daylight savings time,,alittle more light on the subject ,really like that it has a switch on the body
