See Improve Hook Cable Guide. This page shows how to add a guide spanner to keep the hook string between guide posts. That helps keep the string on the pulley. Lionel's TMCC 6-82097 - Bucyrus-Erie Command Control Gantry Crane has a similar spanner/guard.

See Build a Replacement Controller. The original controller plastic Lever Retaining Springs quit "springing" levers. The replacement controller's momentary switches are more reliable.
