Several times a year, I immerse myself here, along Brake Hill Road, which is an easy-off from Rt81, to RT281, to Rt41, at Cortland and Homer, NY....IMG_0643IMG_0659IMG_0669Standing in here is standing in a cathedral.photo 1july2018photo 1vvphoto 2biIf you are into this sort of experience, I recommend the adventure to you without reservation; rather, with great enthusiasm.

I am going to be traveling in upstate NY and New England the two weeks after Labor Day.  I know I will be in Binghamton NY and St Albans VT.  Where and what else should I set a priority to see and do?  I am open to also traveling to NH Maine and Massachusetts.

Come on up to Portland and visit the Maine Narrow Gauge RR Co. & Museum.

I live about 20 min. north of Portland; come on up and see my tinplate layout and collection.

We'll be heading up to Boothbay Harbor in Maine this weekend from Boston to check out a railway museum there, as well.

I second the narrow gauge in Portland - there is a small museum and a ride on the rails available. When we were there 2 years ago, the conductor had just liquidated his O scale collection.

If you're near Kennebunk (port) in Maine and like seafood, be sure to check out The Clam Shack - their lobster is world famous - they catered at least one of the US/Russia summit meetings when G. Bush was President and lived in the area (he still does).

If in eastern Massachusetts near Boston, take a ride over to Charles Ro in Malden to check out their store.

Are those cows or buffalo(Bison)?

They are bison, Eddie G. photo 1biI was so surprised  I had to look twice when I came to an intersection of dirt roads and there they were, grazing. We sure don't get a chance to see bison too much anymore, huh. Apparently, from what I could discern, one man keeps a ranch of them on top of one of the areas around Brake Hill Road, a bit north of Homer, NY.

I was curious how 2356 was getting from Binghamton, NY to St Albans, VT, so I used Google Maps to see a route. It generated a route through Albany, NY, using the I87 Adirondack Northway to travel north from Albany to Plattsburgh (and a bit more). If you take that route, you will be traveling through Lake George, which is a popular vacation destination. There is also a six flags amusement park called "The Great Escape" in Queensbury, right off the highway.

I've done that trip up the I87 Northway many times. Once you get north of Lake George, I think it is a very nice drive.

Sorry, I have no tips on specific places to stop.

Go to Meredith, NH, on the shores of Lake Winnipesaukee, one of the largest, most beautiful, natural lakes in New England.  Enjoy the lake then take a dinner ride on the Winnipesaukee Railway  leaving Meredith in the late afternoon.Check the Internet for the schedule.

Also, taking a ride on the cog rail road to the top of Mount Washington, the second highest mountain east of the Mississippi, is possibly a once-in-a-lifetime experience and very exciting. You can go online and check the schedule.

Upper New England is a wonderful place to visit any time of the year , the scenery will be spectacular and there are excellent restaurants all over the place.

Woodstock Vermont is an absolutely picturesque/quintessential New England small town. lots of accommodations,

shops to explore and great restaurants. i can recommend the Prince and the Pauper in downtown. I would suggest

reservations. J2615696849_a664a95407_benne Farm is a short drive south of Woodstock and worth the time. Nearby is Quechee Gorge.

Which is a quick ride to Simon Pearce Glassware. Plan for lunch and enjoy the classic New England water powered

mill. Hope this helps, have a great trip. Mike

PS While in heart of Suburban Boston, Charles Ro is an amazing stop.

I cast another vote for the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Co. & Museum. Very cool and one of the best and remaining places to see narrow gauge equipment.

We are in the White Mountains of New Hampshire this week. Along with Lake Winnipesaukee there is the HOBO railroad in Lincoln. Both run by the same folks.

http://www.hoborr.com/

Right up the road from HOBO is Clarks Trading Post and the White Mt. Scenic RR. They run a Climax Steamer.

East of the HOBO we stumbled across this Porter parked on the side of the road. Apparently the area was once home to the largest logging railroad in New England. This is one of the remaining steamers from the fleet.

What great timing of this topic. I'm heading to a wedding in Burlington, VT on Saturday, 08/18. The wife wants to take a trip down to Cape Cod after the wedding. Then swing by Long Island. I'm already checking out the train stores for my side trips.
