Rainy days for 2926 are no more - and it's time to turn on the heat! With the derailment behind us, preparations for Steam Up are underway. The boiler will be lit on Monday for the first time in over six decades. This will be a static display (pistons and valves out) and open to the public, crew, and media on Wednesday (8/22) from 7:30 AM to 3 PM. For local coverage, watch KOB (channel 4) for live broadcasts throughout the morning hours. It's finally happening - a new experience, new history, and the magic of big steam! Come join us and hear her whistle blow! #SteamUp2926

Changing the drivers probably improved the balance--this motive was very common as steam technology matured.  Many older engines had their main drivers (at least) replaced with more modern, more balanced wheels in an effort to reduce dynamic augment.  The change was very probably worth the effort/expense because of reduced maintenance, improve fuel economy, and greater ability to apply tractive effort and horsepower to the train rather than the engine.

The resulting appearance was often striking but sometimes comical.
