Got to check out and detail some new Lionscale reefers. I must say, Quality issues are several.

Lionel had a chance to improve upon some things. The compressor ladder, door and guide issues that plagued Weaver still exist. The door doesn’t slide evenly. This operational part is weak along with its ladder. Perhaps metal parts would have been a better choice.

All brake wheels were not glued as most just fell off during the handling process.

New Trucks - Screw tightening on bolsters is a guess and varies from car to car. Same issue Weaver had. Still using those odd ball sized fine thread screws.

No end of car ID markings present. Weaver also missed that detail. Two railers won’t accept this.

Brake man’s platform on end of car was never installed. Also its box label was missing the last digit on the road number. Just a dot was present.

Flat rough texture paint on most cars. Smooth on only two. Which is it?

Lint – dust attached to paint on stirrup steps. Paint was not cured when placing shells on the dirty work surface during production. Had to remove debris.

Improvements were overlooked along with a good Quality inspection in a rush to market this potentially nice model.

I’m finding that the Made in America Quality inspection is about the same as or worse than overseas. Too bad we can’t get it right.

Despite of the discoveries, the cars turned out nicely!

have they already or is lionel going to produce the sound car like the weaver one? if they do remake the sound version they need at least a volume pot to be able to turn the sound down a bite. would be nice to have tmcc to turn the sound on and off and control the volume with out removing the cars, but that would raise the cost.

I seem to remember having to open up a sound car and being able to adjust the volume from a "screw" pot on the board.

yes I agree the sound is anoying all the time. it is neet though. if lionel were to redo it at the very least they need to have the compersser sounds wait to come on longer between sound activation. my weaver one the sound comes on then only stays of less than 5 min it seems then comes back on and this is just repeated over and over untill you finnally get tired of hearing it and take the car off the track and set the switch underneath the car to off. at least a volume pot to turn the sounds down would help as the sound is a bit loud.

although I did make a speaker enclosure out of a shaving cream can top. my speaker was loose and just rattling around in the car. so I re hot glued it and while I was at it added the plastic cap off a Wal-Mart sound and body shave cream can. it was just the right diameter and improved the sound a lot. now if err would remake the mini commander two I could controll the on and off from my cab two and train link it into a consist like my lionel vision line pfe reefers.

just a thought here but lionel could have a real winner if they could have a visionline reefer out of this model with new modern unloading and loading sounds. plus screen controls for all the compersser sounds and such on the cab 2 display. I would by at least a few of these. I have two sets of the visionline pfe reefers and love them. a set for more modern era trains would be nice. maybe a good seller too.

Regarding the on/off sound of the compressor.  That's the way it's supposed to work if it's a well insulated car.  It's only supposed to turn on if the temp of the car gets to a preset high.  And then it turns off when it drops to a preset low.  The fuel would run out mid-transport if it ran constantly.

Just like house air-conditioning.

fred thats nice to know. maybe I will see about adding a volume pot to mine to turn down the sound. that way it will not drown out my engines and other sound cars. I love to run it and have other lionel cars to match it. the sound just gets a bit too anoying for lack of a better word if left on all the time because it is so loud. turning the volume of the sound down would greatly help.

I have one MEC sound car. I.M.O. it is a bit annoying. The potential is there to improve maybe the speaker and sounds along with a pot.

I would buy the following if Lionel made them…

EL

Public Delivery Track did these Weaver cars as a special run back in 2007   I had three of them  Decided they were too new for what I had at that time and sold them  Wish I didnt

Ben – These are not really new. 1964 -1970 is perfect at least for me. BAR below is a 1964.

I remember waiting at the Spring Lake NJ train station next to one of these noisy cars in a CNJ paint scheme. 1960 something?

I never knew Weaver offered a special run EL. I must have been collecting Subways at that time? LOL!
