Hi everyone. I’m very excited for Mth to be reissuing these slant 40 subway cars in the 2019 volume 1 catalog, plated and in both the as delivered livery and the retooled post GOH cars. You can get a total of four 6-car trains. I noticed if you search these cars on the web sight you can see all the routes. The as delivered set is signed up as a E train from Jamaica queens to far Rockaway. The other post GOH cars are signed up as follows. A 8th ave lefferts blvd, B 6th ave from the bronx to Brighton beach, finally Q 6th ave from 57th street to Brighton beach.

Not sure how many people pay attention to the routes Mth chooses but I would prefer to loose the Q train and get a different route. Both the B & the Q are 6th Avenue trains making the same stops. Only difference is the Q ends in midtown wile the B goes way uptown into the Bronx making more interesting stops such as the museum of natural history & yankee stadium.

That said I’ve been waiting for an L train (the Canarsie line) the R40’s we’re assigned to this line throughout the 90’s. The only change needed to make this line correctly is to loose the American flags on the cars. Those flags are post 911. I’m thinking if a bunch of us email Mth maybe they will make the change.

Anybody else have thoughts on these? I’m very excited for these. Just don’t know why we need 2 6th ave trains.

Hi:

I purchased a 4 car set and a 2 car set of the R40's. when MTH released them for the first time around 2010. Do you know if this year is correct? It might have been earlier then that.

With all of the other MTH subway sets that I purchased I wanted to duplicate the number of cars that ran in each train set  in the subway system so I purchased two 4 car sets and one 2 car sets to get a 10 car set. The exception being the BMT standards which I purchased 2 three car sets powered and 1 three car set unpowered to get a 9 car set which is one more car then the 8 car sets that actually ran in each set. With the R-142's I purchase 2 five car sets powered to get a 10 car set.

I remember when the R40's were put into service in 1968. They were something to see. Shortly after they were put into service the end doors were locked due to too much space outside between the car sets until they installed additional metal bars to fill in most of the space between the car sets. I rode then on the N line where they last ran before they are retired from service in 2008 I believe that was the year and then they were dumped in the Atlantic Ocean to help form reefs for the water creatures. One 2 car set was saved for the transit museum and they are run in a set of cars built from the 1940's to the 1960s that Bill Wall who is in charge of the transit museum trips has named "The Train Of Many Metals". Raymond Lowey and crew who designed these cars may have overdone it somewhat but it's all history now.

Thanks DJ, good info.

I'll stick with the original F set with old style logos. This is my favorite and what I remembered in my younger days. IMW has flags and the later style logos for sale.

I selected the blue silver R-12's which is my 2nd favorite subway.

Because of the molded former number board, I may have to make M logos on the PC. Both IMW sizes are either too small or too large to fit that space. Decals are correct to scale but for that space but MTH RK are not. Will have to investigate further. Request MTH grind off that number board for the latest R12's. Also catalog doesn't show blue stripe over the roof, another concern.

So what route are the 12's?

Thanks for posting!

We will probably not know until it shows up. 😤 I ordered the silver/ blue 4pk and the GOH R40’s on the B train

Good news from MTH on R-12’s from my request–

I recently arranged to have the raised number board detail removed from the tool/body. 30-20626-1   O Gauge RailKing R-12 4-Car Subway Set w/Proto-Sound 3.0

Now we just need the correct sized logos made. New M's need to be 1/2" dia.

That’s great regarding the raised number board detail. I ordered this set as well. Did you look at the stops listed for this set? Some are wrong as a #5 train from Dyer to Flatbush wouldn’t run via broadway/ 7th Av and terminate at south ferry. Can you get that corrected too?

I didn't expect MTH to list the stations but now they do.  A+.

Looks like catalog details have improved on their site!

Now if we could just get front, back, side route signage / number close up photos, that would be nice.

This is what I snapshot in my previous post. I’m very happy that Mth is doing this too, for this route, the stops 116th street & Lenox all the way to chambers street are all 7th ave stops not Lexington ave stops.

I have tried many times to contact Mth, but they almost never respond. Even your guy Roy wasn’t very open to suggestions. I’m trying now to get more info on the Cleveland union terminal P2’s and no one is responding to me after several polite attempts.

I WAS JUST ON THE MTH WEB SIGHT AND THEY REALLY TRYING TO MILK THIS SET,I THINK ITS NOW LIKE 2 FOUR CAR SETS,AND LIKE 6 SETS OF ADD ONS,WOW,AND THE ONLY DIFFRENCE I SEE,IS 1 SET HAS A BUE STRIP UNDER THE WINDOWS,AND THE OTHER DOESENT.I GOT THE 1ST RELEASE OF THESE,AND I DO BELIEVE IT HAS A BLUE STRIP.BUT THESE R A HANDSOME SET,I GOT THE 4 CAR SET,AND 2 SETS OF ADD ONS.

I ordered the "A" Train set, along with the Add-On, from TrainWorld earlier this month.  Can't justify spending $1K on a model train, but I'm seriously considering ordering another Add-On set so at least the train can look prototypical with an 8-car consist.

Been wanting an R-40 for ages but because of the demand, have never come across one that wasn't priced high (when one actually shows up for sale). I figure that better to buy the extra Add-On now instead of probably spending $400+ for one on the secondary market once this re-release sells out.

Unless you have 2 subway power units, running 8 overweight cars as stated above is out of the question. They wont sell out this time around. Train market prices are out of reach for most along with a declining interest.

New subs are out 7-26-19  Re-designed R-12's look great!

I was informed all the new LED lighted subs will be arriving in a week or two by Aug 1st.

SO ARE U STATING THAT A R40 MUST HAVE 2 LOCOS TO RUN AN 8 CAR SET,THATS ODD,BECAUSE I ONCE RAN A KOOLAID (F40PH) LOCO PULLING LIKE 20 + CARS ,ARE THE SUBWAY LOCOCS THAT WEAK? OR IS IT ONLY THE R 40S???

It's because of the gearing system in the subway cars--they're the same as the PCC streetcars (end axle driven, with five idler gears carrying power to the other axle). Also the non-powered subway cars use the same trucks without gears. So the powered unit is essentially pulling dummy locomotives, which don't roll anywhere near as well as freight cars. Try pulling ten (let alone 20) dummy locomotives with that F40 and it won't be happy.

Anyone running more than the base set with a two-car add-on, needs to use two power cars. They don't have to both be at the head end--I placed mine as the first/fifth or first/seventh since the intermediate cars are heavy enough not to be pushed off by the second power car.

All MTH Subways except the first set. Those motors were the strongest pulling 8 cars like butter.

Again, diesels and subways are totally different units.
