It’s “'70s Theme” Night at tonight’s game at PPG Paints Arena.  Among the many 1970’s items on display is a small operating 3-rail O gauge train layout.  The engine and caboose appear to be K-Line which are newer than the 70's but there is a 1977 Lionel catalog on display along with some Lionel MPC cars from the 1970's.   My niece is there and sent me the attached video.

According to the Pen’s website, the trains were part of a 1970’s Hobby Shop Display by Stew's Hobby Shop which also  featured sports cards, slot cars, stamp collections, model cars, boats and more.

Go Pens!

Bill

Update: the Game is now over and the Pens beat the Florida Panthers by a score of 5-1.

Bill, That is good news indeed!  Thank you!  I went to bed before checking on the final score!!

Thank you for posting that, Bill!  Looks like a slot car track in the background near the end of the video.

Go Pens!

Did Dave Hanson come up from RMU sports complex, say "Cars not working. I quit! And throw one slot car at the other?" What could be more 70s, Hockey, and slot cars than "Slap Shot"?

I wasn't there last night but am curious - where in the PPG Paints arena did they display it.

Walt:

I wasn't there either but here's what it said on the Pen's website including the location:

1970s Theme Night
Fans are invited to wear their best '70s-inspired attire when the Penguins hold '70s Theme Night!

Collections of team jerseys and arcade games from the 1970s will be among the many special displays in the Highmark Wall of Champions Hallway, located on the FedEx Level between sections 110 and 115:

  • 1970s Bicycle Display from Bicycle Heaven
  • 1970s Toy Display and Music Memorabilia from Johnny Angel's Ginchy Stuff
  • 1970s Penguins team jersey display from season ticket holder Joe Tomon
  • 1970s Hobby Shop Display from Stew's Hobby Shop, featuring trains, sports cards, slot cars, stamp collections, model cars, boats and more
  • 1970s Arcade Games. Pinball Machines: Card Whiz, Buck Rogers, Disco Fever and Eight Ball; Video Games: Asteroids, Space Invaders, Breakout and Galaxian

Throughout the evening, Pittsburgh-based folk rock band November Blue will perform a variety of 1970's cover songs.

Penguins mascot Iceburgh, in-arena host Celina Pompeani and members of the Orr's Jewelers Ice Crew will be wearing '70s-inspired attire. The game-night presentation will also include numerous video and musical elements from the 1970s.
