MTH makes conversion kits for this purpose, and they work very well. I had my PS1 Premier Blue Comet converted to PS3 about a year ago and am very pleased with the results. If you have a PS1 loco that you like and want to keep, having it converted to PS3 is a great alternative to a complete replacement. The conversion kits can be used to upgrade other brands as well. I just had a Williams loco converted using the MTH conversion kit and have a second one on the way.

You can purchase the kits directly from MTH or an MTH dealer. I think the kit costs about $200.00.

There are detailed instructions included with the kit and if you have the required tools as shown in the instructions, I suppose you could do it yourself. However, if anyone other than an MTH authorized service tech even opens the bag that the PS3 board is in, the warranty is voided. With that said, I recommend finding an authorized tech who has been to the MTH school and pay them for their expertise. To me, it wasn't worth risking a $200.00 conversion kit. Some things are just better left to the pros, and this is one of them.
