Hey, Guys

I keep getting E-Mails from customers asking me to make more than the 25 engines and my answer is no. The reason is that if we produce more than the 25 pieces this engine will not be a limited run and I will not go back on my word. There are other dealers making limited run pieces and they are making as many as they can sell. I feel this takes the thrill out of buying a limited run item.

Thanks

Pat

Pat, Pat, Pat.  I applaud you.    For those people that can't see what Pat is all about, he's turning away (possible) extra profit of a larger run to ensure he holds true to his word of only making 25 units.  Pat stuck a stake in the ground before he had a single order.  He's standing by that instead of throwing his promise to the wayside to grab a few extra dollars.

Pat, you are a moral upstanding man.  You set the parameters for your custom run offering for this loco and you're standing by that.  That, my fellow OGR forumites, is the definition of integrity.  Applaud him, don't ask him to go back on his word.

Hey, Guys

These engines are here.

Mine is on its way. At Pat’s request they were delivered with the no class lights boiler front installed at the factory. The other boiler front will ship separately. And, something I didn’t notice in the drawings Pat posted earlier, the shell is totally black therefore no grey/silver/graphite color issues.

I can’t wait for her to arrive.

November 19, 2019 ...Pat,

I have not received an email notice or invoice for my New York Central JA3 #5416.  When did you send out the invoices or PayPal requests?  I called last week and you were not sure when the Hudson would arrive at your store.  I just re-checked my email and have not received an invoice.  Thanks you for the opportunity to add this engine to my railroad.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Thanks Larry. Its not that hard. the one mounted on my 5444 was an uncored headlight (4420) which meant I had to drill it out to install the Lionel number plates in the sides. PSC also offers ones already cored (4743). This is one of them. The reflector has been painted with Molotow Chrome. I make my own lenses.

Thanks so much, Pete. So you used the original Lionel headlight platform?  I will have to research on here your method of the headlight lens.

I did keep the original platform primarily because of the number plate and emblem. To make a lens I just measure the diameter of the opening. Then find a drill bit with the same diameter. Chuck it up in drill press or drill motor backwards and file, sand, and polish the back end to an acceptable radius. Then find a piece of steel or brass at least 1/8" thick and drill a clean hole in it with that same drill. Reverse the drill and start punching out lenses.

Out of curiousity, I wonder if the engine has wiring that will allow the other boiler front with lights to have the lights illuminate. I'd be surprised if the wiring for the lights is present, or even if the replacement boiler front has the bulbs installed.

Thank you.  I'm not sure I understand where the clear lens part actually comes from?? Or are you using the Lionel lens and making it fit?  Sorry, just not following.  That said, have any for sale??

Was the Lionel headlight fixture attached by a screw or will I need to use the Dremel to remove it?

Thanks again, Pete.

I received a tracking number today.  I am eager to see the #5416 next to the #5415.

I did think the factory was sending the #5416 engines with the classification lights on the engine, since it would be easier to install the boiler front without classification lights later.  Hopefully arrangements were made for adding the lights so a service trip is not necessary.

Either way, I am thrilled to get this new Hudson. My other Hudson runs smoothly and sounds great.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Looking behind the installed boiler front I do not see any wiring for the class lights.  It remains to be seen whether the replacement boiler front has LEDs or not.

Larry, I just use some bubble wrap for the lens material  if its clear and smooth enough. You will have cut the headlight off the platform. When I did this I bought a spare 5444 headlight to sacrifice. You may want to hold off until you see if Lionel will have spares for your engine. Another option is get the 5444 headlight and renumber it for your engine.

Could it be the one plug handles both headlight and class lights? It should be just feeding power to the boiler front.

If memory does not fail me the J3a came out in 1937 about the time the NYC stopped using classification lights on the main line because of the installation of CTC on the mainline (New York to Chicago}. Latter when they were downgrade to secondary lines that did not have CTC classification lights were added to these engines.

Hey, Guys

We have 1 Hudson left and then they are gone.

 Thanks

As proof of my above statement about classification lights added to some NYC J3as later  go to rr-fallenflag.org and look up NYC Hudsons beginning with number 5400. They are copyrighted so can not reproduced here.

5400-5404 are J1e's and had class lights. 5405 is the first J3a and was built without class lights as were all the rest. Its been pointed out in their last years some were moved west to the Big E and maybe other subs where class lights were still used but this applies only to a handful.

Pete

Its true that probably only a few J3a ever received classification lights even though in Al Staufer's book Thoroughbreds he did several drawings of J3a with classification lights as built. The same arguments were used 18 years ago on this forum when the 2000 J3a Hudsons  were released. By 1946 they had a different feedwater system applied which changed their  appearance as well as the PT tenders. Don't think you will find a photo of one change being applied without the other.

My Lionel 1931800 New York Central Hudson #5416 from Pat's Trains runs perfectly.

Both it and #5415 from Mr. Muffins Trains perform without flaws.  I am very pleased.  There is no stutter or wobble to the engine as the video shows.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Hey, has anyone heard about the status of the boiler front that was to come with the special run Hudson?

Pat, any word from Lionel?

I was wondering the same thing. It was supposed to be the "sister engine" to the J3a that comes in the set 5410 with classification lights, but with the extra boiler front with no class lights. I happen to have wanted the classification lights and was a little disappointed when it arrived without class lights so I'm patiently waiting to swap out the boiler fronts.

Pat, can you keep us posted on the forum as to the status of the second boiler front?
