Acquired this set.  Earliest 726 with 2426W and three identical 2627 "Madison" passenger cars.  Original boxes for each but no set box.  Seller said his father purchased it as a set.  Equal wear on all.

I can't find any reference to a set with this makeup.  Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

The Madison set was originally called Manhattan by Joshua Lionel Cohen but the industry decided it liked Madison better.  The set was Manhattan 2623, Irvington 2625 and Madison 2627.  You can find them easily enough on eBay.  Just search “Lionel Manhattan Passanger Car, etc.  Madison is on the Morris and Essex Line in northern NJ.  The Morris and Essex line ends at Penn Station NY.  The cars were reintroduced as all 2625 in the 50’s.  I live in Madison and have several of the cars.  Good luck with your set.  Bruce

Even with the sets that had set boxes, retailers were willing to swap individual pieces out to satisfy a customer's desires.  It is entirely possible that the fellow bought that all together.  Maybe eh liked that name better.  Maybe he got the leftovers when other customers had gotten all the other cars.  The seller may be mistaken, but there is no reason o assume he must be.

John,

In 1946-47 all three cars Madison, Irvington, and Manhattan had the number 2625. There is reference made to a set #2114WS that had the 726 and three Madison cars, but each would have been numbered 2625, not 2627. That set could have also come with three Irvingtons, again all numbered 2625.

It was later in 1948 that the three cars received their own numbers and the Madison became 2627 like your cars. But, by then, that 726 set had one each of the three cars, not all Madisons.

In other words, nothing in the references that would explain why your set has three 2627 Madisons!

Like Pallalin said, all sorts of combinations could be bought depending on what was available in the shop and what the customer wanted.

In other words, what you have could very well have been purchased together some time after 1948, but it is not a cataloged or otherwise referenced set.

Still a very nice set - congratulations!

Jim

As cataloged -

Not to belabor the point, but the photo of that set in the 1946 catalog showed three Irvington cars - not Madisons. And if the set did have the three Madisons they would have been numbered 2625.

I know not a lot of us care about these details anymore, but they really determine rarity and originality. We remaining dinosaurs still try to pass on this info when we can to those who might still care!

That being said - a nice 726 with any of those heavyweight cars in such nice condition is an outstanding set.

Note that the outfit shown from 1946, 2114WS -- the '46 Berk with three Irvington cars-- is not known to have been produced. The individual pieces exist, sure. But not the 1946 boxed outfit.

It's possible that, in absence of a boxed outfit, a retailer assembled the pieces shown as above to approximate 2114WS.
