As long as we are discussing foiliage, don't confine yourself to trees (as Moonson said) and don't limit your plants to Woodland Scenics or JTT products

Certainly not for everyone, but to promote topic diversity, I give you the ubiquitous sedum plant.  To be used in a variety of ways from low undergrowth, shrub, to tree; only limited by your imagination...   Harvest time is right now, from your yard or your neighbor’s.  They will thank you for saving them from having to cut it down.  

 

 

Sedum is the plant, when dried it's called yarrow. It comes in a lot of varieties too. I like the wild stuff. The cultivated can almost be too dense.

I've gathered bags full of it over the years. I find that it looks best when used in small quantities, like for low growth, because it has a great branch structure. I plan to use it to make sumac bushes in bright fall red. I'll take the buds off then do the red ground foam.

I find that it looks funny for large trees because it has long bare stems. I want to try making a wire armature, then attach smaller pieces, to create a full, more natural looking tree.

Here is an attempt at some forced perspective using different sized trees & a static HO train in the background. Behind the row of dark green tree tops ( half way between the HO train & the O gauge track) is an accessible stretch of track where I can stage rail cars. You can see a caboose  situated on this track in one of the pics.                                        My train room is 17' by17',not that large with a lot going on. This small section of the layout is sort of a transition between two specific scenes as to give a feeling of distance(or separation) as the train travels from here to there. BLAH,BLAH,BLAH, going back quiet.

Don't know if this measures up to some of the spectacular work shown on this thread but I recently started a small project to finish off the front edge of my layout.

I used several different WS products, fine turf, clump foliage and some Spanish moss. Still need to add some trees and additional details.
