Hello Tinplate World .....the New Jersey Central began running the Blue Comet in 1929 , Jersey City to Atlantic City ..flashy blue train with a yellow stripe .pulled by a Pacific steamer able to hit 100 mph. Lionel announced a Blue Comet set to come out in standard gauge June 1930 pulled by the 390 . Production and sales aimed for Christmas delivery . Horace E Boucher also brought out his much acclaimed Blue Comet in 1930 ..unknown at this time who was first with the Comet in toy trains . Boucher had continued building the late low cab versions of the Voltamp 2100, 2222, & 2500 since taking over the line in 1923 with no changes save running on standard gauge . 1929 Boucher adds a second motor to the 2500 for pulling the 4 car Washington set, the following year the 2500 body is modified with a larger cab and more flare to the boiler and cataloged as the Blue Comet engine. Cars listed in the catalog have yet to appear ..the Boucher Blue Comet cars that were made are in matching rich blue paint long and sleek ..but never seen in any printed catalogs ,flyers or ads. Boucher offered a 3 position reverse unit .. as an option... reverse is the last thing you want on the Blue Comet train as the long Boucher couplers snake and car bodies slam in reverse . The Boucher BlueComet was a deluxe set for the well heeled department stores Macy's and F A O Schwartz. It has been estimated that about 50 sets were made , last being assembled and sold in 1934 . The engines have unique stampings , assumed serial numbers found on the main frame end the cab .. 1010-1089 extremes known currently ..so perhaps 100 engines were made , engines were also offered in black ... Boucher pieces are hand built so variations can exist . Here we have two Blue Comet engines #1010 with factory reverse unit .. blue running boards and domes , and later production #1055 later added Lionel reverse unit , black running boards and domes . Tis always fun to play so lets double head !!!... one must change the coupler on the tender to do this feat....then the fun of trying to get the reverse units to work in sync....... one day may get brave and do it again pulling the Blue Comet cars ...  Hello all ...no chugger ...just the raw growling of teeth on gears ...  smoke we don't need no smoke

Boucher E unit does not have a locked position ...  ..

Yes they run quite smoothly ..with the double motors ..one engine will easily pull 5 Boucher Blue Comet cars

here is a link to see the 2500 puling 5 Blue Comet cars

Hello all ..thank you for your kind words ..  Boucher is just the old Voltamp line ...pretty much established by 1915 ...  Boucher just pushed out the pilot wheels and added a pick up for standard gauge ..in hope to find a market for the dying 2" line .    Voltamp motors with their double fields and cast frames for the engines were certainly a step up from the other boys ......however the sheet metal ...on a good day is delicate at best ....the body sheet metal is thin gauge and does not like rough handling ...   handling the engines is a two handed thing  picking up from the frame ...not the body .. bodies are lots of little pieces all soldered together .....so hand built ...

Voltamp / Boucher never had distribution anything like the big boys ..so much smaller production to a niche market. ...In the 20's folks would buy the Boucher engines to pull the other boys cars ...  if you wanted a 6 wheel drive standard gauge engine Boucher was your only choice ...    most the world was unaware of Boucher and Voltamp ...   here is a link to see the double motor 2500 with standard late 2500 low cab body  from at least 1922 ..most likely before ...but no proof yet ....  still being sold with the old Voltamp style passenger cars in 1929 ..this was the premier Boucher set the Washington Express ... next year the Blue Comet made it's debut ...  but standard gauge was about to fall from fashion ...  by 1933 market had shifted to O gauge with more interest in realistic looking trains ...the scale world was posed to take over .

Hello all ...Boucher is out there ...currently on ebay  a 2100 is listed ...   seek and you shall find ...  there are a number of articles about Boucher that can be found in the TCA quarterlies over the years.   Here is Horace Boucher in his booth at the NYC Toy Show February 1929, as found in Playthings magazine .  Display two loops of track  ..2500 lower loop freights on upper ...and perhaps the 2222 on the top shelf .   Caboose and stock car as shown on display had changed very little since their introduction by Voltamp  20 years earlier .

I've been watching the one on eBay, unfortunately it's missing the tender. If it wasn't, I'd probably hop on it.
