Under Layout Lighting - What are you using?

White rope lights

I just use led 12 vdc strips, about $8 to $10 for 5 meters. I run them off my 12 vdc accessory power supply with a $2 rocker switch. I also have them in between levels to light storage tracks. They also light my grandkids layout and play area, which one just organized, as you can see.

The wiring is my primary concern.  Once I have the track power installed, there will still be switch buses, light buses, accessory buses, and individual structures to tie to them.  And if I have to get under the layout to do maintenance, I want to be able to see and not carry my own light source.

We have a multi deck layout and we use those cheap Chinese led strip lights and matching cheap power supplies.  Works great and very easy to install under the fascia around the layout.  The transformer will run multiple strips.  Russ

LED Rope light work great. Train table I built with my dad:

LED rope lights, for sure.  Dimmable is preferable (would require a dimmer on your circuit).

Those rope lights, effectively mounted, can really be nice. However, having around 215 linear feet of around the wall benchwork it seemed a little daunting to install that much rope lighting so I simply use L.E.D. head lamp and occasionally a fluorescent work light.

Plus the fact that  the underneath of my layout is not a dark solid deck island but mostly 3(+/-) foot width, 42" high avg. of free standing cantilevered legless benchwork /shelving in a brightly illuminated basement.

26 watt.
