Had some time to myself today to run the 3-Rail Scale F units I’ve been working on at the club layout in Syracuse. 

The track pans are modeled after the ones at Rome, NY and the other module is modeled after Kirkville Road in East Syracuse.

PS- All three F3s are powered; both A’s have sound with different sound sets.

Beautiful background for a few beautiful engines!!! Love the NYC. One question... I don’t think I’ve ever seen the paint scheme on the 1604 before - do you know when that was in use???

Beautiful background for a few beautiful engines!!! Love the NYC. One question... I don’t think I’ve ever seen the paint scheme on the 1604 before - do you know when that was in use???

The whisker scheme was the first one developed by The Central for its freight cab units and used on their EMD FTs (1944) and F2s (1946).  This was replaced in 1947 by the short stripe version of the black lightning stripe that we commonly associate with The Central.

The units were eventually painted in lightning stripes as they were shopped. 

Notice the below picture of F2 later in life... full lightning stripe, low rooftop fans, 48” dynamic brake fan and Farr vertical grilles.

Hey, I recognize that video. I was talking to Tim on FB where he posted it. We were talking about the pans and how they worked. Seems that researching on the pans is very hard to get at as there doesn't seem to be a lot out there. Regardless, we both got the same information(there's a post from 2014 on the forum about it, look up track pans if interested, only result).

I leave the scenery to the experts, my talents lie elsewhere.  Although I did assemble, paint and detail the water tower and columns.

I don't know for sure, but this is the first time I have seen track pans modeled(maybe I don't get around as much as I should). I will say that if it was modeled to scale, that would be completely insane taking up to 37 feet to model 1800 scale feet. Thank God the Niagara doesn't spray that long, you'd run out of fluid before you even went a quarter of the way.

My favorite NYC diesel scheme; I have the Atlas #1605, and mounted the fixed pilot /scale-y coupler for an excellent appearance, as on #1604, above.

Like scale 3RO steamers, unless you plan to do some switching or run it as a trailing unit, you can skip/fix the swinging pilot/O-gauge coupler on your diesels. My Hudsons all have scale front couplers, and they do just fine.

As do I... Protocraft on front
