thanks for the reply. i’ve purchased the polar express steamer and whistling tender. I’m not fully up to speed on the lionel stuff from about 1988 to date. if i’m correct to achieve the rail sound of the polar express the correct tender and remote control is all that’s needed? I have the CW 80 for the bell trigger

The engine that you are looking for is from the set 6-31960. You can see on the parts link , the part number for the railsounds add-on tender. Then, there is the Conductor announcement car that operates with the bell button with tom hanks "all aboard".

You should be able to find those on craigslist, eBay or one of the sell stuff apps.

I am surprised no one from the forum offered one yet.

Oh, I am not sure how you could tell, but, the later conventional engine with the series 2 motor is the one that you want. The box is different when you get the set, but the engine only has to have the shell off.

if you see 6-28649 engine in orange box, it is most likely the small motor series 1

thanks for the reply Carl. I ordered the 6-28649 from ebay not in my possession yet. from what I’ve seen to achieve more sound effects I would need at least the 6-28649 tender I don’t mean to be stupid but would that work with the 6-28649 with some of the effects the upgraded engine is built with and is an additional wire harness needed? for now i’m ok with just the whistling tender but looking to upgrade later. thanks for any input

The standard tender has the whistle and bell. The railsounds  optional tender has engine sounds, whistle and bell. The few that I saw on eBay way overpriced. Maybe they are getting difficult to find.

No additional harnesses are needed. The tender is self-powered and all of the sound effects are inside of it.

If you run into any problems, start a new post about it or search the forum first. It is a popular engine set and it is well known.

Good Luck!
