It was built around early 1900s from North Bay to Moosonee

The name changed mid 1940s so as not to be confused with the Texas and New Orleans railroad markings

ONR had a small but varied steam roster that included switchers ,ten wheelers, consolidations, Mikes, Pacifics and the largest steam locos 4 Northern locos

Unfortunately none have been offered in any scale as of yet

Personally I find the first generation FP7s to be one of the most attractive paint schemes of any era

Here are a few pics of the 1100s and early diesels

Enjoy!

Harold,

You need one of these to accommodate all those who paddle the Missinaibe River to Moosonee and take the ON back home.

I thought this was a make-believe car, but it's not!

"The railway currently owns about 25 diesel locomotives and roughly 700 items of rolling stock. One of its more unusual pieces of rolling stock is a canoe car, which is in service in the summer as part of the Polar Bear Express passenger train. The car can hold up to 18 canoes. Canoeists can put canoes on this car as part of their baggage, although canoes are often stowed in boxcars. It is the only known train car specifically designed for transporting canoes and kayaks."

The railroad was almost lost in 2012, when the Ontario government made a tentative decision to divest itself of the railroad. After determining that this would be very costly, in 2014 the determination was made to continue supporting the railroad, and in fact make some improvements, including adding some new passenger cars for the famous Polar Bear Express. Good news. The railroad also has some other unique cars beside the canoe cars. The new train also carries some equipment not commonly found on passenger trains, including chain cars (flat cars) for passenger vehicles.

Another option for a ON car - a Lionel scale PS-2 hopper, which was part of a LCCA 2-car set. I have this set, and the car is very nice.

Harold,

What engine is that in the photo?  Sorry for late post, but just began my 2 month summer stay at a cottage in North Bay, Ontario, where the Ontario Northland used to have passenger service. I have a Lionel Ont Northland freight consist.  My loco is an RS 3 diesel, 6-28543, but looking for a more modern unit.

Thanks,

Michael

Michael Pags The Toy Train Workshop located in Cumberland Ontario has an MTH Ontario Northland GP38-2 diesel with proto 3.0 (20-21082-1) listed on their website if you're interested in acquiring a more modern unit. Tom Bellfoy (the owner) is a straight shooter too.

Thanks for the tip on the MTH unit and the train shop in Cumberland.  That's a bit far from North Bay, but close to a route when we travel to NY to visit family and friends.

Not sure I want to jump into the DCS realm. Most of my electronic motorized units run on TMCC. I do have a RailKing LIRR passenger consist that runs on the inexpensive ($50) remote.  Even though I moved to Portland, OR from upstate NY several years ago, I time my east coast visits with the TCA train fair in York each October.  I'll see what's available then.

Atlas Model RR Co. produced the Ontario Northland National Steel Car plug-door 50' box cars in N scale and HO scale.

To get them in O scale from Atlas they would need to get a new O scale model produced somewhere.

Lionel could someday have these Ontario Northland plug-door 50' box cars made using the former Weaver Models Modern plug-door 50' box cars that are now in their LionScale line. It would take at least a year before they could get it produced.
