I am trying to find an Atlas O Masterline owners manual for the F3/F7 engines, and regretfully can't find mine.  Atlas website no help, and I also tried Google as well, no luck.  I am looking at how to adjust the speed steps and set the momentum.

Any help would be most appreciated.

BobbyD,

the link to the "tmcclegacy" didn't work.

I have the plated Santa Fe engine.  I know I got it from @MrMuffin'sTrains along with a powered B and dummy A.  Can't find any of the boxes though

John,

Gunrunnerjohn posted those manuals. With the OGR issues of late they may have been deleted.

If your units are from the past few years use the ERR link. I'm not sure we can copy images from manuals anymore.

I don't have those particular engines, but if you have the ERR version, AUX1+0+AUX1+0+BOOST should reset to 100 speed steps which is the recommended setting.  Momentum only works when the engines are set to TMCC mode on the remote.  In TMCC mode you get 32 steps even if you have selected the 100 speed step setting.  IF the engines run close in speed you can modify the speed steps slightly using the "nudge" feature.

John,

Speed Step Selection:  The default speed step is 100 as shipped.  The momentum and stall features are not applicable, and do not operate. 100 speed steps should be used for best performance.

32 speed steps should be used when double heading this locomotive with any older production Atlas locomotives (EOB-equipped).  Note that the Cruise Feature must be disabled in ALL units when doing so.

To switch Speed Steps do the following:

Activate 32 Speed Steps:   AUX1 + 0 + AUX1 + 0 + BRAKE

Activate 100 Speed Steps:   AUX1 + 0 + AUX1 + 0 + BOOST

Note: The speed step selection is stored until changed, and survives power cycling.

If you want information on the "Nudge" process to speed up a slower engine in a consist, request it in this thread.

Sincerely, John Rowlen

Let me restate what my "problem" is.  I have other Atlas F units.  B&O and Rock Island (both purchased in the the Bob Thatcher AM Hobbies).  Both of these will start slower and creep up to speed.  Maybe I am using the term momentum vs. speed control incorrectly.    If I turn the Legacy remote throttle, there is no delay at which the Santa Fe engine rolls and gets up to speed quickly.

Since I posted this thread, another question came up from one of the replies, when I add an an engine in the Legacy remote, I thought the right way to add them was "TMCC".  I am now somewhat doubting what I have done for the engines.

I appreciate the help.  Thank you.

Let me make sure I understand.  You have 3 engines:  B&O, RI, Santa Fe.  All the engines have been set to 100 speed steps. When you set the engines up in the Legacy remote you can select TMCC or R100.  If you are trying to get the engines to run ar similar speeds you would need all the engines set the same TMCC or R100.  R100 is also TMCC, but gives you finer control of speed.  So you have all the engines set up the same way and you are having problems with the Santa Fe.  In speed step 1 the Santa Fe is moving quite fast compared to the others and accelerates faster than the other engines.  Am I understanding the problem correctly?

John,  It sounds like the engines are set at different speed steps, 32 and 100.

1. Turn OFF the Cruise feature on all engines.

2. Set engines each at 32 speed steps individually (AUX1 + 0 + AUX1 + 0 + BRAKE)

3. Assign individual Legacy ID as a TMCC engine with RS on remote.

4. Build a consist and run two engines, then add the third.

Re-read the manual page I typed for you above.

Call Atlas O and ask what would cause the slow start up that you refer to as momentum. It could be that the engines are set at different speed steps, causing them to respond differently as power is increased on the Remote..  Good luck.

As someone has mentioned, it would be helpful to know the product numbers.  If you give the road numbers for the engines we could probably find them on the Atlas web page.

The mention of Bob Thatcher tells me these are older Atlas units. Probably with EOB. It sounds like your Santa Fe has the newer ERR version. The EOB has 32 or 128 speed steps. The thing with EOB is that it accelerates very slowly. Sort of a built in momentum feature. You can stop turning the throttle and the engine will still be slowly accelerating. The ERR features 100 steps. While there’s not a big difference between 100 and 128. They are totally different as to how they perform.

Your best option is what John wrote by disabling the cruise in all 3. If you are trying to run EOB and ERR engines together in cruise and that’s the way you want to go. I’d add ERR to the 2 that may have EOB.

Dave, I'm sure you are correct. Without the Atlas product number an image would help. Have seen a pair of the EOB units run and they are way different than the ERR units.

John, not sure I would spend the time attempting to get them to run together even if the were all they same road name.

From a thread 2014.

Some more information.  Atlas F2/F3 offerings.
Oct 20, 2011, ERR drive
Sept 4, 2009, EOB drive
April 4, 2008, EOB drive Included Santa Fe.
Dec 29, 2006, EOB drive  (new model)

Santa Fe offerings were 2008

EOB speed control can be turned off, 32, or 128 speed steps.

With the Cab1 remote set each F unit.

32 speed step mode.
ENG + ## + DIR + AUX1 + AUX1 + AUX1 + 1
(A horn/whistle will sound after the 3rd AUX1 and after 1.)

128 speed step mode.
ENG + ## + DIR + AUX1 + AUX1 + AUX1 + 2
(A horn/whistle will sound after the 3rd AUX1 and after 2.)

Cruise OFF mode.
ENG + ## + DIR + AUX1 + AUX1 + AUX1 + 3
(A horn/whistle will sound after the 3rd AUX1 and after 3.)

Your F2's are EOB drive system.  You may want to set each to the same setting and try them again.

Sorry, I don't have a Legacy set.  Someone else would have to help you with the Legacy handheld in TMCC mode.

I have been out of the country for the past week plus.  I think I have confused some of you so maybe let me try and restate what I am looking to do.  I have a single 2 year old Atlas engine that I bought from Mr. Muffin trains.  It is engine #37.  It is the plated engines that everyone had the issues with.  It's that run if that is ringing a bell.

I am not looking at multiple units and connecting them.

I am looking at how to make the engines start slowly.  if I turn the throttle the engine responds instantly.  I am not looking for that instant response rather something picks up speed and slows downs gradually.  Is that momentum?  If so how do I set that.

I know I can as I have set it on my other Atlas engines I was referring to (B&O and Rock Island).  I just can't remember how to do it.

You probably have Atlas 30134013, F7A, Santa Fe engine 37L.  It was cataloged in 2015 and delivered in 2017.  It is a TMCC engine.  Using a Cab2, it could be run by setting the engine info to either TMCC or R100.  TMCC has 32 speed steps, but it has momentum and "official railroad speed" settings.  R100 has 100 speed steps which gives finer control of the speed, but it does not have either momentum or "official railroad speed" settings.  If you want your engine to start/stop "gradually" then you will have to set the engine as a TMCC engine in the Cab2 remote.

1.  Make sure the engine is set to the 100 speed step setting.  With the engine powered up, press Aux1+0+Aux1+0+BOOST.  If I remember correctly, after pressing BOOST the engine moves forward a short distance and then stops.  You should now be in speed step 100.

2.  Using the Cab2, select the engine number, press INFO, and scroll to make sure you have DIESEL, TMCC, AND RAILSOUND5 selected for the engine.

3.  At the bottom of the Cab2 remote are three buttons:  L, M, H which give increasing amounts of momentum.  If you press and hold down M, you can use the red throttle dial to give values between L and H.  Although I don't usually run on H, for the purposes of testing I would suggest pressing the H momentum button.  This give momentum setting 8.  You can change it later.

4.  With the momentum setting on H, rotate the throttle dial quickly until the target speed indicator in the display is half way across the screen.  The engine should "slowly" start to accelerate.  Since TMCC has the speed graph in the display like Legacy, you can watch the current speed gradually increase toward the target speed that you set.  But, with 32 speed step function of TMCC you have to accept that each time the engine changes to the next speed step there will be a rather sudden change in speed as it transitions to the next speed step.  Legacy has 200 speed steps so the transition from one speed step to the next is much smoother.

5.  Rotate the throttle dial back to 0 quickly and the engine should take about forever to slow down.

6.  If you have the engine set as R100 in Cab2, the engine will change speed step instantly to each individual "click" of the throttle dial.  There is no momentum in R100, but since there are 100 speed steps instead of 32, the engine will change speed more smoothly if you slowly rotate the throttle dial.

If these directions don't work, I have no idea what is wrong.
