One of the four traction tires slipped off my Lionel AC12 cab forward. Unfortunately, Lionel put the traction tires on the driver hidden by the Cross-Head and other drive gear. Any clue as to how to get the old tire off and a new one installed?  Do you have to take the whole engine apart? Reach me at: milt@paiger.org    Thanks

I am guessing that this is the same TMCC engine that you have posted earlier about (sound issue). However, I think that the traction tire issue is the same as between that and the later Legacy version. If you look at page 31 of the manual for the TMCC version (available here: https://www.lionelsupport.com/...ents/73-8071-250.pdf), you will see that the process is described briefly as the removal of a drive rod nut using a 3/16" nut driver. Unfortunately, it really depends on which of the traction tires has come off. Not an easy process overall.

If memory serves me correctly separate the shell from the chassis so you can rotate the wheels by turning the motor. Rotate wheels until the bolt which was previously hidden by the cross head is clear to place the wrench on.

....or, you could just place the loco on the track and run it back and forth a bit at a time until the bolt head is accessible. As many times as you need. Won't take many.

I found the e-mail I received from Dean in customer service at Lionel a few years back with how he changed the traction tires on the Cab Forward. I followed them and it was easy to change them.

What I do is position the screw between the main rod guide, disconnect the eccentric rod and main rod assemblies and pull the main rod back out of the way, you can access the screw after this is done. Reassemble in reverse order.

Any chance you could post the actual email or send me a copy?

TURBGINE - A couple of pics of the driver involved (perhaps 1 from the side and 1 from just beneath the affected driver) would also be helpful in assisting the rest of us understand Dean's (from Lionel) comments on how to change the tire; particularly for those like me that have difficulty visualizing things.

Just a thought.

I am not sure how similar the mth cab forward is to the Lionel one, but it has a similar problem.  My trick around it is to remove the screws from the other three driving wheels and leave the screw by the cylinders in.  Then with connecting rod only attached to the hidden driving wheel, I can easily slide the tire over the connecting rod and down on to the  hidden driver.
