Thanks for the heads up Dave. I’m thinking about painting one olive drab and slapping on some stars and us army insignia for a nice military fuel truck.  Any word on the specific release date or are these at hobby lobby right now?

I looked at this kit on the Atlantis website, and the description leads me to believe it comes with Sinclair AND military "markings", if that is interpreted as decals.

… Minor repair and cleaning needs to be done on all tooling after it's idle for years. Salvinos had to tool new tires for the NASCAR kits as that was missing.

Bottom line is if there is support for vintage kits Atlantis will continue to restore vintage tooling and run kits. More than you ever wanted to know about this stuff.......but I have worked in the plastic kit hobby since the 1980's so important to me!!

So, after repeated use, these plastic kit toolings start to lose their "crispness?" Or, something like that?

I ask because … after many decades … I'm starting to build some model kits again. I'm going to purchase an old Monogram 1/48 B-24J Liberator. I believe it was new tooling in 1976. And, re-released 7 times over the next 17 years. All of these different re-boxings do pop up on eBay.

Some folks on a modeling website suggested that it is best to purchase one of the first releases of the kit (with their somewhat higher cost)… because the tooling would be in the best shape. Should I heed their advice?

Thanks

Older tooling does wear. How they are maintained is a big issue. The Monogram B-24 is only 45 years old about.....a youngster in tooling age where kits from the 1950's, like this Revell tanker, are still around. I'd not pay a lot for a early issue B-24 kit....Monogram maintained it well.

My build from first issue built in the 70's. My cat jumped on it and it broke it's back....like a real plane!!!

The White tankers really are memorable trucks. I had fun kitbashing two "MiniTank" trailers into a 1/87 scale Esso tanker (cab is a resin kit from Sylvan Models) for my HO scale layout, and I've wanted to bid on a few vintage Revell kits on eBay to build the 1/48 scale version. The price of the "new" Atlantis kit is very reasonable by comparison.

AMCDAVE, they still make the B-24 at Atlantis. Dongift5

Correct....but that kit is box scale not 1/48 scale. The model I show above is 1/48 and  was tooled in late 1970's......the box scale kit early 1950's. thanks

If you could read, that model is a B-25 Mitchell Bomber!

Also two different SCALES. The B-25 is 1/64, or the same size as S gauge.

The B-24 is listed as 1/92, but that seems like an odd scale.

That's what I posted earlier as 'Box scale'  Back in the day models were scaled to fit a company standard box.....say 12 inches long by 4 inches wide.  The kit company didn't care about a constant scale....just fit the box!!

Ah-ha! That makes sense. It's still going on today. Hot wheels or johnny lightning or one of the other manufacturers who make mostly 1/64 scale, made a Sherman tank recently. It's listed as 1/64, but measures out to about 1/83, but it's the same length as a 1/64 automobile.

Boy was I disappointed.
