Today, I made a spur of the moment decision to go to my nearest railfanning spot. It is in the little community of Florence, Tennessee, which is between Murfreesboro and Smyrna. The line now belongs to CSX. Before that, it belonged to L&N and, before that, to NC&StL. The mile post I went to was 25. AT this point, the railroad is four tracks wide, because Nissan has a plant that gets rail service. They receive empty autoracks for loading. There is a control point about a quarter of a mile south from MP 25. On this day, there is a mixed freight in the western most track and the dispatcher has lined a southbound movement at his control point, so I drive to my favorite parking spot, in an empty field on the west side of the tracks and wait. After a period of time, another mixed freight rolls past going south. After he passes, I notice that the first train did not move. I looked back south to the control point and the dispatcher had lined up another movement to go south, so I settle back and wait again. After about an hour, a south bound unit grain train pulls up and stops short of the grade crossing and the first mixed freight continues north. After a few minutes the unit grain train continues his journey south and I chase him for a few miles. I arrived at MP 25 at 8:30AM and left at 10:15 AM. I was there one hour and forty five minutes and saw three trains. I did not get any pictures on this railfan session because I did not have a camera with me.
