It's already been discussed in the Lionel General Topics section.
Will that count as an "investment" in gold for my IRA?
Hal
Not into gold plated locos or even gold jewelry. Not my thing.

I'm with you
Nice eye candy, but not my thing either. I'm sure there will be a market for the occasional gold loco.
Its safe to assume that's just a glossy coating on the brass locomotive, it was noted when this locomotive was announced and the prototype was shown Lionel stated that the final locomotive wouldn't be that glossy. This is the smaller sister to the J that Lionel offered but didn't make. I don't understand why N&W fans didn't jump on this locomotive.
This is just a video of the brass hybrid locomotive Lionel offered and got the prototype stage before they knew they didn't have enough reservations for it.

Probably because most "N&W fans" and modelers, "jumped on" the beautiful BRASS version made by Sunset/3rd Rail, a few years ago.

Not enough reservations since Sunset/3rd Rail already produced it. Maybe the Lionel folks were not aware of that.

What is not being said is that Sunset/3rd Rail sat on unsold K2 product for years. Sunset/3rd Rail made them in 2011 and they didn't sell out until 2019; that's a better part of a decade. The prototype is simply not that popular. Even if the Sunset/3rd Rail K2 didn't exist it is doubtful Lionel would have received enough orders.
I like the streamlined K-2 quite a bit. Were I earlier in my "buying arc" I would have reserved one. This is an example of a noteworthy piece being so overshadowed by its Famous Sibling that even people who should have known better and reserved one did not do so. I'm looking at you, N&W geeks. Shame on you.
The previously-produced 3rd Rail product did not help, either. It had soaked up most of the weak streamlined K-2 mojo already. The Lionel piece would probably have been the superior product, too.
Lionel: if you want to sell me your K-2 prototype, e-mail me....couldn't hurt....

I was going to mention that but WBC beat me to it. Scott has escaped a few close calls and this one (along with the C&NW H1 and the SF 2900) languished on the Sunset/3rd site for quite some time. No, the Lionel piece was NOT influenced buy the Sunset version. The lack of sales/orders was strictly what the market could bare vs. what Lionel was willing to make, period, next sentence.
In addition, the Sunset version can currently be found on the evil site if anybody really wanted one, and have been available for some time. I think the NW guys just need to understand that there is just not enough people to that wanted this engine compared to the J, A or Y class engines.

Dave, that’s surely a beautiful Steamer, and for those that collect the Gold Engines, this is a must have, if it becomes available on the BTO order form, I hope it works out for everyone. Thanks for posting. Happy Railroading
