Hi Gary,

Great video. I have become a fan of LionChief Plus. With LionChief everything comes together in one box and when someone comes by they can operate the train and so can their kids without a long explanation. I think I told you I have a LionChief GP7 Boston and Maine which was made for the LCCA. A fellow in my club who is a member of the LCCA sold it to me. I also want the BNSF GP20 and maybe a Santa Fe FT AA100_4205100_4190.

Another great review, Gary.  Keep up the good work.

I have to agree with the folks in the other thread that the blacked out port hole windows look a little odd.  It's not a big deal, I don't think, but I think a clear or clear-frosted port hole would have looked better.

I might just have to pick up this set as well in the future, in the Atlantic coast line version as I already have 5 williams 18" ACL cars that would look real good behind it.  Lionel and Menards are really stomping on my train budget with all the low cost, good quality stuff lately.

Hi Gary:

Thanks for the review.  I'm a bit confused about the B unit.  I looked at the Santa Fe AA unit 82290, and one is powered and of course one is not. When I look at the B unit it says that it is also powered, and so, I'm wondering: are the powered A and B units both controlled by one LC+ controller? Does it give you more pulling power? Is the B unit the part that smokes?

Many thanks!

PDX, I have the LC Plus Santa Fe ABA and could help answer your questions.

Are the powered A and B units both controlled by one LC+ controller? Yes, the one that comes with the AA, the B-unit does not come with a remote - the B-unit is specifically linked to its matching AA units remote.

Does it give you more pulling power? It does, funny thing is I didn't really think it needed it as the powered A unit was already good enough for me, I would have rather had it cheaper and non-powered, but it is what it is.

Is the B unit the part that smokes? All the units smoke, the powered A, the non-powered A, and the B-unit. The powered A has the sound unit in it, and both AA engines have lighting and remote Electrocouplers.

PDXTRAINS & BNSF-MATT and all the guys giving feedback about the new FT - A-B-A.  I am going to add a photo and information from the B Units Manual / Spec Information.

Lionel Update:

Called Lionel Today - The Lionel Chief Plus FT A - B - A, was shipped with no spare traction tires, they will be in stock in three weeks.  They asked me to call back in three weeks and they will ship them at that time. Lionel no longer puts “Lionel Liquid Smoke Fluid” with their locos.

LionCheif Plus FT by George Brown

I have been running these EMD FTs, A-B-A Rio Grande, now for seven months. All is well on my layout. I have four LionChief Plus locomotive on my layout and they are a lot of fun for my grand children and visitors to my train room. Each visitor gets their own controller. No sharing.

Heres something you can do with ABA, both A & B are powered, i did this with my DRG.

Run small freight train 4-6 cars with powered A, run small passenger train, 3-5 cars with dummy A up front and powered B pushing it, pulling cars.

Have them go in opposite directions.  Both will be at same speed since powered units are on same controller.  Its fun to do.

If you track is big enough, put them halfway apart and run them the same direction.  That much train pulls 3.7 amps on my 90' loop powered by z4000.

That is an interesting idea.  I like it.   Does the light on the dummy A come on?

I had to send the Atlantic Coast Line AA unit back to get replaced because of the power A unit shutting down intermittently and not starting back up.

I tried it and the issue is they light is off in the dummy unless it is in reverse.  I decided to play around with the B unit since I have the universal remote.  I have a couple of nice Lionel Alco black Erie dummies with lights and horn that I sandwiched between the FT B unit and it looked good and worked o.k.  I am considering picking up the Erie B unit for $159 to go with these.
