Rhode Island is my home State and when I built our layout, I had to have something that was reminiscent of the many years I spent there. To me, Newport is without a doubt the most beautiful part of the State. So I decided to make a model of the Newport Bridge that is for most who visit Newport, their gateway. It is one of the most beautiful suspension bridges anywhere with the awesome arched towers. Not to mention, some of the most beautiful scenery it connects to in the world.

We have just returned from a spectacular two-day visit to the layout of Wood & Kathy Foss. They live in Newport and it was Elizabeth first trip across this beautiful bridge. Previously, she only had the model on our layout as a reference point. She was in awe of the Newport Bridge as we passed over it on Friday.

Here is a comparison of the real thing and the model.

"I could trade you some Brooklyn Bridge shares for the one on your layout."

Not going to happen Ray , but it was made in Chicago. Some people complain about the Dupage Show, but I found the vendor who made my Newport Bridge at that show. Many who nationally advertise custom bridges refused to do this project, but the Dupage guy was great to work with.

Art, while we were having dinner at a wonderful restaurant that overlooked the Newport Bridge (it was evening and dark outside), the lights of this bridge really stood out in the night sky. There are only accent lights that line the cables that are very dramatic, but I think I did a better job in also lighting the deck and the arched bridge supports. By the way, Wood agreed with me.

I received an e-mail last night from another Forum member who saw this thread and wanted to share a Newport Bridge story with me.

He is an avid sail boater and was attending a regatta in Newport. The race course took them directly under the bridge. He went on to say the view of this bridge was spectacular and created a memory that he will not forget. When you start a thread, you never know how it may touch someone. In this case it was pretty special to one of our members.
