I may or may not have posted about this before. My local club has a pair of MTH PS2 Montour SW9s, product 30-2327-1. A while back, both engine started operating erratically. One of the two has sounds and lights, but does not respond to a DCS track signal or get found by the remote. Sometimes, when it is placed on a track, the sound and lights turn on, other times it remains dark. The other SW9, after running on my home layout for a bit, lost sound totally, no emissions whatsoever. The lights still worked, though. It ran fine for a while like that, but after a while it started randomly stalling out when doing switching. Now, whenever I try to run it, it needs a shove to get going and to prevent it from stalling. I haven't tried to run the engine in some weeks, so it might have quit moving for good.

Any idea what the problem(s) is/are? Are they fixable?

All comments are appreciated.

If you need them, there are several videos of these engines running on my Youtube channel.

Are the wheels and pickups clean, is the battery dead, speaker can be bad.  These are old and 5V boards so they could have age related issues, but has basic maintenance been kept up?  G

I think the wheels and pickups are clean; the last time I looked at them there didn't seem to be any obvious dirt buildup. That being said, it has been several weeks. The battery on the second SW9 might be dead, I'm not sure. As far as basic maintenance, again I can't say I performed any on these units. By basic maintenance, you mean oiling of gears, cleaning pickups, stuff like that?

I'd say these points you bring up are definitely good starting points for me to take a look at these engines this week.
