Back in July I made a quick trip to Tulsa, Ok to see the wife’s family. My wife’s uncle has been involved with the effort to restore and display the Frisco 4-8-4  #4500. A visit to see 4500 is always required when we go to Tulsa. Here are a few pictures.

There is a box covering th bell to prevent theft.

The other cars at the display are the Murray Hill passenger car, a two-dome tank car, yes they do exist, and a Frisco caboose. The interior of the caboose is missing, it was burned out by vandals. The interior of the Murray Hill is also missing. The fellow next to the Muray Hill is the wife's cusin David. Now, Atlas or Weaver, how about making us a model of this caboose and the two - dome tank car in O scale! A 3 - dome tank car in O scale would also be nice to have.

Some of the inside componants of the 4500's cab has also been re installed. The break stand is still missing

A look inside the Fire Box. I have been told that the 4500 received a complete overhall before it was decided to donate it to the city of Tulsa. A look into the fire box bares this out. Look how clean it is! Due to its condition I am also told that the 4500 was considered for restoration and use as part of the American Freedom Train back in the 70's.

We also made a a visit to the TSU shops. The employees at the shop were kind enough to let us in and look around . We also saw the restored trolly.

The SP slug and the SP U or GP something were being worked on by the TSU shops for use on other railroads.

Ok, I have caught up on my post from the past two months.

Have a good weekend,

Richard

Since there is an intrest in 4500, here are some "before" pictures from a few years back.

I first saw the caboose and Murray Hill back in July of 2008 during a second visit to see 4500. I can not find the pictures of the first visit. Here is the caboose. it was in really bad shape.

Although the Murray Hill still needs a lot of work, here is how she looked back in July of 2008, inside and outside.

When I fist saw the 4500 she was in very bad shape, and restoration was just getting started. on my second visit she looked a little better, but there was much work left to be completed. Here are some pictures from that visit back in 2008. The cab was still missing all controls and guages. The tender had not been painted, and the 4500, although painted, she was still missing her "detail parts."

Here are some pictures of the 4500 after restoration was complete, and she was being moved to her present location.

My wife got to see 4500 at its present location before I did and she took these pictures.

We need stiffer penalties for vandalism. I get so sick of the "They are just kids" excuse.   It is a hard crime to catch and kids do it because in the unlikely event they get caught, they will just get probation if no one gets hurt.

I hate to think how much railroad heritage has been lost over the years to vandals.Sorry for the hijack.  The engine looks great.  Thanks for sharing the pics.

Sam,

I was hoping you would chime in. Do you know the status of the coboose restoration?. Where did the two dome tank car come from? The only thing it needs is the replacement of the ronning boards around the frame and then it would be 100% restored.

Are there any plans for the Murray Hill's restoration? I have heard that the location of it's interior components is known, but whoever posssesses them now will not agree to return them in order to restore the Murray Hill.

Hopefully Sam you can provide us with some up to date information.

Thanks for joining in the conversation.

Richard
