I'll be going to the Big E show in Springfield in a couple of weeks and looking for a 12-14 vac source of power to run some accessories on my layout.

I was thinking about picking up a used Lionel Z or V transformer to fill the bill. I should be able to fit a dvm in my pocket. Other than the obvious, like a cracked or frayed cord, is there anything in particular that I should be looking for, or wary of, in these units ?

You should look inside for any obvious damage.

I use 28 VAC center tapped transformers.  Each provides two 14 VAC outputs.  I power all my switches and accessories from these transformers.

Interesting - do they come with an input cord and plug into regular house current ?

What is the max current draw on each output ?  Price and source ?

Thanks.

The transformers I used don't have line cords.  They are common transformers available from electronic supply houses.  The are manufactured in various sizes (watts).  Mine output 8-10 amps per leg.  I enclosed 2 transformers in a hobby box, added a line cord, fuses and output terminal blocks.
