Adding Smoke Lifters ("Elephant Ears") to new Vision Line Coal-Fired Challenger?

For what it's worth, I seem to remember that the UP equipped their oil fired Challengers with smoke lifters (actually named 'Wind Wings'), but only one coal fired Challenger was fitted with the smoke lifters as a test. The smoke lifters were subsequently removed from that coal burner (can't remember the road number of that particular Challenger). 

I just looked back at the 2010 catalog and there were 5 VL Challengers (4 UP, 1 Clinchfield) in there, all with removable smoke lifters. Don't know whether it was prototypical or not, but I like the look with them on better than without. Anyone out there know if the screw holes are in fact there on this unit? Thanks!

David, I just ordered a VL challenger 3981 and was hopping to add the smoke lifters too.  Did you ever get an answer or try fitting them?  I really hope it works. Thanks,

Not a definitive comment, for sure, but my Lionel Clinchfield coal-burner (what else?) Challenger from, I guess, 2010, has no apparent lifter mounting holes. That may be true only as a model manufacturing/specific road decision, though, as the CRR locos never had lifters..

(The Clinchfield did indeed have several "late UP-design" Challengers after WWII, bought from the Rio Grande. The UP itself never actually owned any of this particular group of "UP" engines.)

Well, your correct.  There are no screw holes on the chalenger for the lifters.   Lionel said, if I make holes for the lifters I'll void my warranty,  so I'm going to attach small magnets to the lifters.  That should keep them in place and won't void my warranty.
