the only difference between the two is the 990 base is not a command base, it is a dummy with a charger.  the handheld is the same.

I think what he meant to say is the 993 is a charger only.  The remotes will work fine.  There is no difference in a 990 system remote and a 993 system remote.  Enjoy.  The best part is you turn the new remote on, scan for your 990 base and the layout is at your command.

Big difference between the 990 and 993.  The 990 is a true Legacy Base.  The 993 is a charger only.

That was kind of my inital point. If there is a big difference, then why so close in price. Why isn't the 993 about half the price?

I don't know the reasons in pricing. That would be a question for someone in Lionel marketing.

I really was just complaining about the prices. My brother-in law always has a line that "IF you have to ask the price then you can not afford it". Easy for him to say with a silver spoon (or maybe a gold spoon) in his mouth when he was born.

I would speculate that the price of the 993 is so high because Lionel knows that you do not need a 990 if you only run at at club.

It does seem odd the the 993 is so high. I have just decided to buy another 993 set instead. With another base as a spare I could also have 2 different sets of engines one in each base.

Yes but you Can not update the 993 so u need the 990

I don't have a 993 set, but the following things appear to be the same for the 990 and 993:

Remote control

Power transformer

Case/cradle

Charger

LED illumination on cradle

 

The only thing that I would expect to be different inside would be the circuit board that contains the 2.4 MHz radio subsystem and digital circuits for communicating with the CAB-2 and generating the track and serial commands.

 

I would expect at least 75% is common to the 990 and 993.

 I'm in way over my head here but also contained in the 990 would be the memory chip, or whatever, where everything entered is stored. 

 

 I know that is why I went with a second 990 setup.  I had run out of unused ENG and TRN numbers.  The Cab2 won't let you share numbers like the Cab1.  It's a shame the Cab2 is limited to two digits for ENG and single digit TRN numbers (pre Legacy).

Yeah, I had a senior moment.  I meant the 990.  I went up and edited my original post.

OK, that one confused me!   I'm familiar with those moments.
