Unfortunately the ill-concieved extension of the #7 line made it impossible to build a second tunnel in the most appropriate and less expensive place. The #7 extension is idiotic and ends nowhere, deeply underground. It would have made great sense to have it go to the ferry terminal to New Jersey, but they cut out the 12th avenue stop that would have been close.

Can't (and don't want to make this political) post the one of the comments to the article due to the partisan content,  but it accurately stated that although the Federal government was ready to move forward with funding there was none in the most current Federal budget.

What I find most interesting is that many of those who support the tunnel propose to fund it via the transportation trust fund and gas tax increases.

A much better source of funding would be the Port Authority bridge tolls, which, according to the linked article "Between October 2011 and March 2012, the tolls took in a whopping $602.7 million".

That's almost THREE QUARTERS OF A BILLION DOLLARS of income in six months.

Rob, I agree with your funding suggestion.

New Jersey's TTF is already broke and in dire need of money to fix our aging road infrastructure. It would have to be a fairly large gas tax increase to also add funding for the tunnel. Something the politicians in this election cycle do not have the will to do.
