I purchased an MTH Rail King 3.0 Long Island RS-1 from a mail order dealer who I have done business with in the past. This is probably the second pre-order I have done with this dealer and this time I actually had to remind them that I placed a pre-order when others were getting theirs. So about two weeks later I get a Rail King Long Island RS-1 in a rough box and the engine already had all the operating features set, horn, bell, engine sound, etc. My question is that on notch 2,3 & 4 with the DCS controller the engine hesitates until it gets to about notch 6 and it smooths out. Is that normal? It seems that my premiers operate smoothly on notch 2.  I was so disgusted after having to remind them that I had pre-ordered one that I couldn't get myself to call or return it to the dealer, but will opt for MTH service if I get feedback that suggests this is not normal.  I do like this engine very much, and needless to say I will not do business with this dealer again.  Not that they will care because my business is a drop in the bucket and they know it, and there is always someone else that will buy the product from them.

I had a very similar experiance recently. Mail order dealer, had to call him to get him to send a preordered mth rs1 after I heard others getting theirs, received an engine that had been clearly out of the box , no wrapper. The engine had been handled or packed such that the handrails were broken and bent.

I returned the engine,

I bought one at another dealer, they are a great loco.

All my MTH stuff, PS2 or PS3, runs well at three. Some balk at 2.

the usual suspects for hesitation are dirty track and poor connectivity.

but that doesn't mean there isn't an issue with your loco. The tach tape could be rubbing against a wire and get blurred, a loose board/wire, etc. don't hesitate contacting the dealer or MTH.

i had an isse with my LIRR RS1 (worlds fair). It had a bent axle out of the box. MTH took care of it though. Their service has been pretty good to me, if not expeditious.
