AF 0-8-0 SIT query

That looks like a 574/575 O gauge tender 1941/42 do you have any other parts to help pin it down?

I found the tender shell and I believe it is PW for the SIT chassis. Inside it has a part number of PA9778

The chassis with smoke unit fits OK but I still don’t see how any trucks attached to it with those large openings.

They didn't have smoke units pre war.  This is really odd.

Maybe somebody tried to put the smoke unit on the prewar tender and gave up.

What is interesting is that the curved slot for the smoke unit on-off lever is in the correct place and looks like it was die cut at the factory. A prewar chassis would not have that slot.

Yes, I knew the smoke unit is post war which as you say makes it really odd. The two locating pips each end of the smoke unit fit nicely into the chassis which seems like it was designed to fit. It has a slot for the on/off lever which looks correct and not cut out by someone at a later date.

Is it possible that this chassis is from that company that made a "sound" tender? "Glencoe" or something like that? Sorry if that's a stupid question...

I have never heard of a sound tender, what was it?  With the Gilbert smoke unit attached to it you don’t have any space for anything else. It is the large openings that are puzzling.

Neat! I am from Pittsburgh and never heard of the Senco tenders. The 342 tender above is not one of them nor does it use the chassis.

One more detail. The two wires that would connect to the trucks for power pickup are visible. There is no evidence of the two wires that would go from the trucks to the engine. Postwar Gilbert steam engines relied on the tender for all power. Perhaps those two wires are still attached to the missing trucks.
