Hi All,

I'm getting back into the hobby and planning my first layout that doesn't reside on a 4x8 piece of plywood (actual benchwork!), and I've been studying what Trainman2001 (forum topic) and others have been doing (which looks outstanding).

It seems pretty common to build L-girder benchwork and then, on top of the cross braces, lay down a plywood track platform, upon which the track lays (perhaps on top of Homasote as well). Usually this platform will follow the shape of the track pretty closely.  This seems like a great idea in that it supports the track and gives you lots of room to stand up between the cross braces and work on it, but what generally fills in these blank spaces above the benchwork at the next phase? Do you custom cut more plywood to cover it up, and then build scenery on top of that?  Or is that generally the end of the plywood, and a cardboard lattice or similar is then constructed for a non-flat landscape surface?

Thanks; this forum is a great community!

I use lots of different materials depending on . . . . My filler is mostly 1/2 inch foam sheets except where structures might go.  There I use plywood scraps.  If any change in elevation I use the foam again and plaster cloth for the terrain.  Over that is a coating of Structolite and Hydrocal castings for the rock work.  Around the layout edge I use either masonite hardboard or luan paneling.  Russ
