Want to convert a Weaver O gauge RS-3 into an RS-2. Looking for someone who can make me a ( detailed 3D printed)  Alco RS-2 short hood to fit the Weaver O gauge RS-3  I have dimensions, photos,  line drawings to use for reference.  Can also furnish Weaver RS-3 body to scan if that would be easier than starting from scratch.  Searched Shapeways and no luck. None of the O gauge manufacturers has an affordable Alco RS-2 for sale.  Division Point unit, that is coming out, is way beyond my means.  If anyone has a better idea on how to do this conversion let me know.  As a last resort I know I can shave off the existing side doors and attach full length doors and use Archer vent decals if I have to salvage the existing short hood to make an RS-2 short hood.  Thanks and await any help !!!!

This is very interesting.  I am getting educated on the differences between the RS-2 and RS-3.  For the purposes of the short hood, is the primary difference the elimination of the battery boxes on both sides, and the addition of the pair of full-length doors with proper louvers?  It also appears there are a couple of equipment boxes added to the cab base, which could be part of a new hood part, and one of them appears to have some equipment mounted to the top.  Still searching for better pictures.  Is there anything else dimensionally different from the RS-3 short hood?  Is the hood end door the same?

For 3D printing, it may be best to try to design the short-hood with the correct door, louvers and base boxes, and rely on brass detail parts for the door handles, lift rings, grab irons, headlight, sand filler, numberboards, etc.  This should work well within the limitations of 3D printing, and result in a superior part.

For the Weaver loco in specific, the short hood walkway would need the battery boxes removed.  Since the walkways have diamond tread molded in, that end of the loco might benefit from having the walkway sanded flat, and a new diamond tread applied from PSC for a uniform job across the model.

This could be a cool project.  I have an undec Weaver I'd be willing to try to turn into an Erie RS-2.  Right now I am working on another Shapeways job, but in the meantime if you have any drawings to share on RS-2's please send them my way so I cab get organized and put together an action plan.  As well, http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/ and http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/ have some great vintage photos, so I need to filter through them and save some of the better ones for reference.

Beyond the short hood, it seems the exhaust stack location is another primary difference on the units with air-cooled turbo's, which were later relocated when converted to water-cooled.  Many other details seemed to vary by RR.  One interesting thing I've notices on RS units is that the stepwells can be enclosed, or have one or two steps open-backed, with little rhyme or reason.  I am also trying to figure out if RS units included any type of step or ground/inspection lighting.

This might be a bad location for this post to see traffic, perhaps the 3RS or 2R forum would have some more interest.

Thank you for the detailed picture.

Yes, each Alco RS-model seems to be it's own beast, and the different O-scale manufacturers also have their own takes on them.  Interestingly your own RS-1 seems to feature rivets, which do not appear on the RS-2 or 3.  I was not aware of that difference before.  I guess it's like the early GG-1's of the period, which also used riveted construction.
