The American Freedom Train had 26 cars for most of its travels.   Between K-line, MTH, and Lionel, 21 cars are available.  The missing cars are the three flatcars (with trailers), the tool car, and the Power/Bunk Car.  I plan to use one of my GGD PRR HW combination cars for the tool car, but had no source for the trailers or power car.

My search for the flatcars with trailers is coming to a close with the help of Alan (ALANRAIL).  I was always planning on using the Atlas 89' flatcar, but there were no trailers available.  I approached Alan about doing 3D printing of the 10 trailers and we have been working on the design (well, he has done 99% of the work - design and printing - but it was my idea).

He sent me rough samples to look at and I am really impressed with what Alan can design and produce.  He did some with 1/16" walls, 1/8" walls, and 1/8" walls with internal braces to keep the wall from warping.  The one with the 1/16" walls was flimsy, and you can see the walls bulging out.  But it may be stiff enough with the roof glued.  Alan plans to print the final ones in white, although these would be perfectly good painted.

Really nice! Did lionel make all the display and passenger cars gor their set? Will Alan make some of those trailers available for sale?

You will need to ask Alan, but we have discussed that there are many folks out there who have the K-Line set, the Lionel set, or like me a combination of the sets (mostly K-Line with Lionel cars not produced by K-Line).  I think there would be a good market for these cars for those who want to complete their AFT.

I know I'd be interested in a set.  I already picked up some of the Atlas 89' flat cars and was talking to a friend about possibly 3D printing, but if Alan has already done the work, and is willing to sell them...

These MTH cars are not models of any AFT car.  MTH just took their generic smooth side passenger set and painted them in the AFT colors.  These sets had no Showcase, no Display, or correct crew cars.  Plus, the AFT did not have any domes.  The two MTH sets, released several years apart, are pure fantasy.

However, the baggage cars of those sets do work as cars 20 and 33, or later after renumbering as 33 and 34.

MTH's scale GS-4 and T1, on the other hand, are pretty accurate for those engines in AFT colors.

I will say one thing about MTH's fantasy AFT sets, they sure look nice and get a lot of good comments when running them at a show.  Here are the MTH cars:

Here is what the AFT really looked like (minus tool and flatcars):
