I have a flyer 420 engine that is in pieces and would like to get it running. Is the motor the same as Lionel as far as the wiring goes.In series as to say from pick up to brush thru armature then other brush to stator winding then ground? Thanks for any help.

What about the reverse unit?
I do not believe the wiring is the same as a Lionel.
Flyer motors go from pickup to main windings, then to reverse unit (if present) and out to brush and then to armature.
Jim, this link should give you the AF info.
Wow great info thank you. I'll probably run without reverse unit for now.
Thanks for that link. It is an interesting reference that I had not seen. The AF engine in the publication is a postwar model. The 420, and 422, are prewar 1939 engines. There are differences in the component designs and wiring for the prewar three rail AF engines. Consider the reference as a guide, not as an exact match. For example, there is no smoke unit in a prewar engine and the reverse unit will be in the engine, not in the tender. For prewar AF I know just enough to be dangerous, hopefully a prewar collector can add to this topic.
Not much to add. The OP figured it out for forward only.
