Guys,

While at last weekend’s Spree, I came across a resin cast American HiRail Hiawatha engine and tender shell. It requires a Gilbert Atlantic chassis and a few more parts. Does anybody have any recommendations?   Especially which crosshead and pilot truck to use, also hints on assembling a decent looking model. When these shells were sold, they were part of a kit offered by Tom Hodgeson, and were very limited in quantity. Does anybody have the instruction sheet or has done one of these? The original kit included paint, decals, wheels and side frames. I can manage without those, since paint is paint, and I perhaps can gin up decals and find side frames and wheels to fit, but a few hints on required parts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dennis,

Here's a photo that a guy from another list sent me.  Very nice kit from what I've understand, but all I got was the two shells.  I can finish it off well enough using parts from other things.  Not as nice as this, but good enough for my purposes.

The original offering also had the Hiawatha cars, which I don't have.  So I'll use a set of  Gilbert/Lionel cars repainted to Milwaukee Road behind it.

I've always been partial to the oddball engines and rolling stock.  OK, those who know me also know why...

Jerry,

I found this info on your model on the NASG site.

Like you said the original American Hi-rail kit was offered by Tom Hodgeson.

The link shown above shows a kit of parts by Dean Hall.

Something told me he participates on this forum and sure enough he does.

Maybe he could help you with your project.

Mark

Mark,

Thanks for the link.  It didn't work at first, but I found the info on the NASG site when looking for it.  Great shots of the parts in the kit.  Like I said, I only found the two shells, both of which need to be stripped of the poorly applied black paint.  Right now, this is a low priority project, but I like to get things in order before starting one.

Scott,

I contacted you on the email address in your profile.  Thanks for the offer!
