Found this Frisco boxcar on Ebay and bought it for $5.00. It was in poor condition with two broken couplers. A dirty, discolored shell, which was originally a crème color, and half the original road markings rubbed off from years of handling. Did a bit of research and found out that this piece was produced by Lionel in 1957.

Sanded down and filled the remaining road markings, washed it, primed, painted and reassigned it to a new railroad. Wire brushed some surface rust from the platform, primed and repainted it. A set of new trucks with operating couplers and she's ready to roll again!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who doesn't overlook these sorts of cars.

Like you said, they're affordable - especially when they're well worn. And you can adapt decals from HO scale, which still has a huge selection being made. And as you can see from below, I like modern road names too. And some "representations" of more modern trains.

Plus on a smaller layout, the smaller cars just look better. It's not just the "scale" of the trains themselves, but the overall presentation.

Nice job on your car too, Erica Ann.
