On the old layout, as another forum member suggested, I put a test track at the front of the bench work backed with scenic express stone walls. It really looked good. I am thinking on this new layout I will add a couple of long straight sections of track at the front edge of the layout running to tunnel portals on each end with hidden return loops. I was thinking I would accomplish this with an O72 or O54 turnout and then install curves to loop the track back.

Anyone do something similar? Suggestions?

I have also thought about doing it as a double track with a hidden loop back on each end. Wouldn't take much more space and avoid a turnout to deal with.

I don't know how much room you have to work with.

First figure out your largest engines and that will determine your radius. If you are running huge scale Pullmans etc, well... go as big as you can fit. MTH for example goes up to 082.

If you make compromises like I do, run no smaller than 054 but keep switches 072 if you can. Use a bit of flex to fudge.

Your longest train, engine to caboose will determine the length of the turn out to place on either end of your loops. You can use any kind of loops and even include flyovers to get it done.

I myself have a chance to wye one end with turntable and the other will receive a loop. There will be a sort of turnback loop grade to gain elevation and increase running time in my space. 35 linear feet is not much to work with.

Good luck!
