anyone have a good video of the lionel 29847 helicopter in operation flying off the flat car?

I have one from the NYC central set that's a few years old.

I do not know how much the newer ones are different from the old ones

Watched all the cool old vids,works every time !

I have tired to make that thing fly like they show it.

I have really tired hard ,lubed ,checked for molding flash ,etc etc etc and all I get is a take off and a ground loop crash.

The most is about 6 to 8 " and it's done

I gave up after the wife sad she could make a paper airplane that flies better 

Well that's not very promising. I think my son would have fun with it if the helicopter flew properly. I still can't find any videos of one being tested showing that the copter fly's

I had three modern era helicopter cars, and many postwar ones. IMHO the modern era ones didn't work as well as the postwar. But none of the helicopters work very well. As soon as they leave the flatcar, the body starts spinning along with the rotor (certainly not as fast though). For some reason, I still like the cars though.

I think the satellite cars work much better.

I find that the MTH helicopter cars are the better choice. They work much better with a flying height of around 5 feet. They go pretty cheap on dabay.

I'd have to agree.

 

If the look of the solid ring around the blades is not an issue for you, these fly very well compared to the Lionel ones I've had recently.

The (edit: MTH) helicopter car we use at our club flies very quickly up, until it hits our 12' ceiling.  Then it falls very quickly onto the layout, often on the tracks in front of an oncoming train!

 

We have found that you need to hold the power button for a while until it's spinning real fast, then let go quickly.

 

The kids love it. (so do we!)

Allow me to cast another vote for the MTH copter car.  I don't have a lot of MTH operating cars, but this one is superior to the Lionel version.

I have both Lionel and MTH.

By far the MTH is the very very best flyer.

ERR makes a board that is very easy to install that allows you to launch the MTH helicopter anywhere on your layout, either standing still or moving.

If you hold the button down long enough I think it might go high enough to classify as space debris.

Kids love it.

The first time I saw the MTH version was years ago at the York meet, and Mike Wolf was doing the demonstration. He was truly having a great time launching it over and over and I can say I have had the same enjoyment and so have all the kids that see it.

Isn't amazing how those old "cold war" Lionel commercials played into (lied to) our imaginations!  As a cub scout, the den meetings rotated to a different home every month. One of the scout's parents were financially well off and he had a spectacular layout.  He always had the latest and greatest Lionel operating cars and accessories.  I remember my disbelief when the helicopter cars, missile cars, exploding box cars, etc didn't work like on TV.  I was expecting them to work in slow motion

It still goes on. Ever seen commercials for games like Clash of Clans or Boom Beach?  They are fun and funny, but they have nothing to do with actual game play. That is pretty much the rule for any video game:  cool action, no actual game play. 

no vids of it in action though - mth seems to be cheaper on the bay but I like the lionel look a lot better. maybe ill get both, 1 for each kid.

I think I would enjoy more of a "Nano-drone" on a flat car...
