Thanks to tips from this forum, when I had trouble with a screw camming out on a train car, I ordered a set of what Amazon said are JIS screwdrivers (Hozan D-550-100, D-555-100, D-540-100 and D-530-75).  They worked where my old Phillips head screwdrivers did not, so I did not follow up.  A bike mechanic told me JIS screwdrivers are no longer made, so I did some research, starting with the label on the screwdrivers (which do not say JIS) and the Hozan website.  Hozan calls these Phillips screwdrivers and not JIS - see their website. https://www.hozan.co.jp/E/cata...tools/D-530_555.html

A motorcycle website did some research on this and says they are confused but it looks like JIS screwdrivers are no longer made.  https://www.webbikeworld.com/h...screwdrivers-review/

Can anyone clarify?  Maybe someone from a train company knows more.

Japanese Industrial Standard screws / drivers have been around since before WW2. It's almost a Phillips... But not quite as the heads are designed to not cam out... And they're probably not going anywhere anytime soon. The head should be identified by a dot in the middle of one of the webs.

HA!  You beat me to the picture and description

Moody's are very good; I gave a set to each of the guys in our train group about a year ago. Also I have found that Wiha Pozidriv screwdrivers work very well on JIS screws. I have found Wiha numbers PZ1x80 and PZ0x60 have served all my needs.

Pozidriv is an entirely different bag of potatoes. Russet actually. Pozidriv has a different head on the driver that while it may work, isn't correct and again may damage the slots on the screw. See attached picture if you want to enjoy a stroke.

EDIT: UNPOPULAR OPINION - we should all be using Torx, Hex or Robertson. They are the best. Period. Don't tell me why I'm wrong, I won't listen.

I am not having any luck buying JIS screwdrivers.  I tried B&B Hobby and Grainger, but I cannot find any JIS screwdriver sets in their online catalogs.  Moody's sells only skinny handle (like jewelers) JIS screwdrivers, and I would prefer a regular sized handle.  Can anyone provide a link?  Thanks.

I prefer Robertson for woodworking screws, but I have not done enough model train work to form an opinion about using small Robertson screws for trains.

I got mine from McMaster Carr. They sell quality tools and ship promptly.

Follow the link and select JIS.

If they don't have it, you don't need it.

I've been unable to find a long handled version of the #1 and #2 smaller sizes anywhere and have been using the set that gunrunnerjohn posted awhile back.
