All the CB&Q Atlas Zephyr cars have “California Zephyr” on the upper nameplate, as far as I know. But all of the other trains that the Q ran had “Burlington” on that plate. Too bad Atlas did not include an interchangeable plate. I think it would widen their appeal. image Any of you folks out there ever try this? Any thoughts on how it could be practically done?

I have a few locomotives that have removable roof hatches attached by magnets, and it seems to work quite well.  This application just might work for interchangeable name banners.  Your idea of interchangeable banners has crossed my mind, too.  If such existed along with the production of the differing observation cars for DZ, KCZ, TCZ, GPZ, et. al., it would cause me to spend a stupid amount of money to acquire them.  The CZ cars would match a lot of other Zephyr trainsets were it not for the name banner.  The only other Q related trainset that had personalized name banners was the Texas Zephyr. (IIRC)

I'm sure others will comment on this. I re-lettered a diner with "BURLINGTON" on the letter board some time ago and changed the name of the car to "SILVER FEAST" which was used on the Twin City Zephyr, as well as in pool service. Unfortunately, none of the dome cars, including the observation car, match the TCZ.

The CZ dome observation cars had the dome toward the rear of the car, which was unique to the CZ. The other name trains, such as the Twin City Zephyr had the dome located toward the front. And of course the Denver Zephyr, and others had a blunt end observation car.

If only Atlas would come out with the blunt end Denver Zephyr observation, now that would be a great model to have, but I doubt it will happen, especially at this time.

Ray, based on your experience (and Santiago’s) you have come close to solving the riddle for much of the situation. Were the other observation applications true to fidelity such as the Alaska model?

I would be willing to stretch myself on that observation if i could get the banner. I rode the Twin Cities many times as a kid. What a thrill it was and I’d love to build a train that’s “close” if I could.

How did you do it Ray/ Santiago?
